One of the reasons I share almost everything we're doing in the South East is simple: I want you to copy it. If a strategy gets more children learning, gets more students excited about STEM, raises academic standards, or inspires excellence, don't admire it from afar or criticize Alex. Replicate it in your region. Improve it. Scale it. Africa has spent too much time protecting ideas instead of spreading what works. I don't want the South East to be the exception. I want it to become the template for Africa civilization. Imagine every region in Nigeria building its own Olympiads, ranking schools, training teachers, identifying talent, and making education a public movement. Imagine every African country adapting the same ideas to fit their own realities. That's how continents change. Education is Africa's greatest opportunity. If something works, copy it.

I've spent the last several months researching, travelling, and studying why countries like Singapore, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Canada and Finland built some of the world's best public education systems. One thing became clear: Nigeria doesn't just have an education problem. We have a school management problem. We have been invited to Singapore for 2027. We will challenge their best students in Maths. The winners of the 2027 South East Maths Olympiad will challenge the best in Singapore in 2027. 56 other countries will join too. I like how the world is now taking an interest in our children. I am benchmarking our education against that of Singapore, Finland, Shanghai, China, Canada, and the US. This is how we can move from being a third-world country to a first-world country. The future is looking exciting.

We captured this beautiful moment as Egejurum Onyedikachi and Don-Anele Munachimso arrived at Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri, yesterday to a true hero's welcome. These are not football stars. They are not musicians. They are not politicians. They are children. Children who became the world's best in Mathematics in the Primary and Senior categories. Don-Anele Munachimso is also the world's best in Science. The last literary figures from the South East to receive this kind of heroic public welcome were Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Watching our brightest young minds being celebrated like national heroes gives me hope. For too long, we have celebrated almost everything except academic excellence. That is beginning to change. Education is reclaiming its rightful place in our society, and a generation of children is growing up believing that knowledge, hard work and excellence deserve standing ovations too. This is bigger than two children. This is the beginning of a movement.

Peter Obi or whoever will go to court again. The court will deliver another silly ruling again. Then the song lyrics will change to "Something must change in 2031." And they will do it all over again in 2031, after which they will start looking forward to 2035. That's the Nigerian way. If something hasn't worked 50,000 times, do it another 155,000 times because each time you repeat a failed strategy could be the time you get lucky.

In the three local Togolese languages I speak, I cannot find a word for corruption. The closest equivalent is theft, or greed. But there is no word that captures the precise institutional act of a public official using the power entrusted to them by a community to systematically loot that community’s present and future. We borrowed the word from a Western language, detached from our lived reality, and in borrowing the word we borrowed its weight, which is to say, not enough of it. I think about this often. Because the absence of a word is not merely a linguistic gap, but a conceptual one. And that conceptual gap explains something I have observed my entire life: the extraordinary tolerance our societies extend to corrupt officials, and the extraordinary contempt we reserve for petty thieves. The petty thief who steals a phone or a chicken from the neighbourhood is treated as a moral catastrophe. A despicable human being. Someone without values, without honour, deserving of public humiliation and sometimes worse. But the government official who has looted the public treasury for decades is greeted with deference. Called Excellency, invited to ceremonies, celebrated at funerals. His wealth is admired and his connections are sought. He is seen, in some quarters, as someone who mastered the system, as someone agile and clever, as someone who understood the game and played it well. What our collective psyche has not yet fully grasped is the arithmetic of what corruption actually takes. For every franc a corrupt official steals, he is stealing the education of a child. For every contract he awards to himself, he is stealing access to healthcare from a citizen who will die of a treatable illness. For every road budget he pockets, he is stealing the safety of everyone who drives on the road that was never built. He does not steal objects. He steals lives, he steals futures. Theft is understood immediately because its consequences are visible, personal and direct. Someone steals your chicken. The victim is identifiable. The loss is tangible. The community witnesses the suffering in real time. Corruption is different. Its victims are dispersed across an entire society and stretched across years. Nobody can point to a missing hospital bed and say that was mine. Nobody can see the child who never learned to read because the school budget disappeared into a private account. The harm is real but it is invisible, scattered across millions of people who do not even know they are victims. Ngugi wa Thiong’o understood that the language we use to think shapes the concepts we can grasp. As long as corruption remains a foreign word describing a foreign abstraction, it will never carry the moral weight it deserves in our communities. As long as we can see a man who has stolen the futures of an entire generation and still call him Excellency while we stone the boy who stole a chicken, we have not understood what has been done to us. And we will not be able to undo it.

African Independence is a Myth - Chinua Achebe Chinua Achebe said it plainly. African independence is a myth if the same foreign powers that claim to have “left” are still interfering, still choosing sides, still supplying weapons, still shaping outcomes, and still pretending they are neutral. That is the dishonesty Achebe was pointing to. They call it an African problem in public while fueling the same crisis behind the scenes. So what kind of independence is that? This is why the conversation about Africa’s freedom cannot end with national borders. To be truly independent, we must have absolute control over our politics, resources, security, economies, and our future. Anything less is performance.
