Gas car: ablaze within a few seconds (see clip). No chance to escape / be rescued. EV: slowly heating up, announcing itself with popping sounds and smoke. Ample time to escape / be rescued before the big flames start. If at all. Did you see how the CT’s battery pack survived this crash relatively unscathed?

It is marketing. For the battery cells (which operate at ~3.7 V each) it does not matter how many of them are in series or parallel. They can take a certain load at a certain temperature and suffer a certain amount of degradation depending on these parameters. It does matter a lot though for the charging electronics, as 800V generates a lot less heat. So in the end it is more efficient to go there, rather than double the current. It is the same reasoning why Cybertruck and Cybercab changed their 12V to 48V electronics: lighter cabling, less energy loss, which results in a lighter and cheaper car. Unfortunately however, 800V creates confusion by introducing a new standard. It is making technology that is only a few years old appear obsolete where it certainly isn't. In that way it is mainly a powerfull marketing tool. But where do we want this to end? Are we going to obsolete our infrastructure, just to advertise higher numbers every few years? I sure hope not.

Introducing an extra standard does not necessarily mean innovation, even if the standard has advantages. It also means another standard to learn to deal with, causing confusion with non-technical owners. If your goal is to make the EV experience as seamless as possible, 800V has no place in the market. If your goal is to brag about bigger numbers, 800V is the way to go. 800V is twice as much as 400V, so it must be twice as good, so buy our cars please?

@NavoldNavinci @Cyber_Trailer Great, holding still in the middle of an unlimited autobahn. How exactly does this improve your chance of survival? However, switching on the interior light, unlocking the doors and starting to honk is a great idea. Maybe @Tesla can add this to the next software update?

Die DMS (Driver Monitoring System) was een eis van de RDW. Oorspronkelijk (pre 2018 of zo) was het genoeg om af en toe het stuur aan te raken. Dat was in de tijd dat Autopilot niet veel meer was dan een goede lane keeping met adaptive cruise control. Mensen wisten dat met truuks te omzeilen en zo gebeurden er ongelukken omdat men stopte met opletten. Toen ging de NHTSA alle ongelukken onderzoeken en volgden er recalls. "Autopilot gevaarlijk" kopte de gezamelijke media, maar het bleek vooral de afgeleide bestuurder te zijn. De recalls bestonden dan ook uit software updates die de gewichtjes zouden detecteren en later uit steeds strengere bewaking van de bestuurder, o.a. door de later toegevoegde interieurcamera. Nu FSD zo goed is, heeft Tesla die bewaking in de VS wat soepeler gemaakt, maar daar was de RDW het niet mee eens. Daarom is die nu in de Europese versie nog veel strenger dan die ooit was. Verzekeraars hebben daar niks mee te maken. Wel zijn er verzekeraars in de VS die meer korting geven naarmate je vaker FSD gebruikt. Misschien gebeurt dat hier ook wel als in de statistieken zichtbaar wordt dat FSD toch wel voor minder ongelukken zorgt.

Going from your numbers you got on average 58 km/h one way and 51 km/h the other way. Was it indeed a return trip to retreive the caravan? How was the wind? 380 Wh/km is quite high, but both speed and wind are a factor. I got somewhere between 290 and 380 Wh/km with a T@B 320 depending on many things.

@s_scholtysek What kind of caravan was it? A small Eriba Touring or some double axle 2.5m wide Tabbert? At what speed?

@aikisteve @AnnickDeRidder @kennethdee Het is sowieso lastig te meten hoeveel ongevallen voorkomen zijn. Pas als er een significant aantal auto's op FSD rijdt, zul je dat terug gaan zien in de statistieken. Of niet, maar dat verwacht ik niet.

Als het ongeval binnen 5 seconden na het uitschakelen van FSD gebeurt, wordt het alsnog in de statistieken van Tesla zelf opgenomen als een FSD gerelateerd ongeval. NB: Dat wil niet zeggen "ongeval dóór FSD", maar "ongeval waarbij FSD mogelijk een rol speelde". Aan de cijfers is immers niet te zien of de override nodig was om een situatie op te lossen of gewoon een domme zet, zoals in dit geval.

@Maja_JCJ @AnnickDeRidder @kennethdee ... en al gauw werd de bestuurder gearresteerd omdat men opzet vermoedde. Zeker was in ieder geval dat hij het gaspedaal in de aanloop naar het ongeluk steeds dieper indrukte, waarmee FSD overruled werd. Doen kranten niet meer aan rectificaties?

Ik snap wel hoe het komt dat mensen tegen auto's zijn, maar niet zo goed waarom ze dan tegen het verminderen van de nadelen daarvan zijn. De grootste kritiek op FSD is niet dat het gevaarlijk rijdt, maar dat het (te?) defensief rijdt en te streng oplet of de bestuurder zichzelf niet laat afleiden. Dat is pas win-win, voor iedereen op de weg!
