This is a message I received from someone whose mother works as an Anganwadi worker in Madhya Pradesh. She says women have been “ordered” to gather today, light a diya to “celebrate” Prime Minister Modi’s birthday, and even record videos praising him and his government’s schemes, with “action” threatened for non-compliance. Now just think about the indignity of this. If BJP governments had spent this energy addressing the actual problems Anganwadi workers face—poor pay (5,000 to 10,000 rupees), crushing workloads, vacancies, no social security or healthcare, and centres functioning out of crumbling buildings, then perhaps these women wouldn’t need to be “ordered” to praise anyone. If a government has genuinely transformed their lives, their gratitude will come naturally. But today, these governments are focussed on manufacturing gratitude for the PM with elaborate and coercive PR activities!

The result is a system where the party bearing the cost has the least information to evaluate it. The regulatory gap is structural: scheduled medicines are capped under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. Most medical devices and consumables are not leaving both the pricing and the information around it almost entirely unmonitored.
