a masterclass in how to PR:
- accept near-but-not-yet-realized future as fact (post-quantum! very scary. almost here! we're not ready.)
- muddle qualifiers for ambiguous attribution (most widely used cipher: AES, reduced AES tho? not the same, but it sure sounds the same!)
- immediately talk about cybercriminals and BILLIONS of people impacted (like, the entire world!)
- go back to quantum computers, but at least add the modifier "if developed" (tyvm!)
- clarify that a weaker variant was studied, where the 200-800x faster attack result was attained (what's the baseline? what does 200-800x mean for this Unused Weaker Research Variant? doesn't matter, you just have to imagine the next breakthrough happening, like without exponentially more resources or anything, get with the program!)
still, if this is what it takes to get more people interested in cryptography, just like everyone is now interested in maths, it's probably a Good Thing!
New Anthropic research: Discovering cryptographic weaknesses with Claude.
Claude Mythos Preview has helped our researchers find weaknesses in cryptographic algorithms—the mathematical methods that are used to keep data private.

i wish we could all be less serious
we should all just be laughing at that post about bun instead of taking it seriously
the reason it got written in the first place is because everyone is way too serious about dumb stuff
just want to remind you one more time that significantly lowering the cost of housing would solve, overnight, almost every single problem in the country
finally read the OSTP NSTM-4 memorandum so proudly cited by anthropic, and turns out the entire thing is just a self-own whine-fest about getting commoditized at a fraction of the cost by maliciously exploitative chynese actors who dare remove the performative "security protocols" and "ideologically neutral" and "truth-seeking" holiness of American frontier models through their "industrial scale distillation attacks"
furthermore, this memorandum also claims that these "attacks" are actually able to significantly and systemically undermine the poor fragile financial house-of-cards of "American research"
this is _not_ what you put out when you have a defensible technical moat or a significant research lead, my dudes
Using an LLM to optimize code: I created a reference implementation of @kevintracy48's collision detection in C, then used gpt-5.5 to optimize it and managed a > 100x speedup from that baseline. Cost ~125M tokens
Code and details: github.com/macton/differe…
LLMs are hard to create a moat around
it's stateless compute that you can switch overnight when a better/cheaper option shows up
all the commotion you see is downstream of this fact as companies flail around trying to fight this
You are smarter than this Ro. Imagine if Bernie had taxed @elonmusk 100% on his PayPal capital gains. We would have no @Tesla or @SpaceX - none of those jobs or GDP. Who do you think allocated the capital better for society? He will already pay $100 B + in taxes - more than any human ever. I hope he donates some to kids via @TrumpAccounts to make every kid a shareholder in 🇺🇸 & continues investing all his heart, soul & money for the benefit of America & all humanity! 🇺🇸🚀🤍
Musk is worth more than South Africa’s GDP. @BernieSanders and I proposed a 5% tax on people like him.
In one year, it could fund:
- free public college & trade school
-$10/day childcare
- Special-needs education nationwide
Wealth inequality is the moral failure of our time.
No, you don't get it.
He does not have $1 trillion sitting in cash, it is 99% stock in his companies.
To make that wealth liquid would mean selling all that stock which would swiftly destroy *both* the companies (Tesla, SpaceX, others) and the wealth. If he sold it all, he'd end up with maybe $100b max, several hundred thousand people would be out of work, the companies ruined and many of their suppliers also ruined.
Okay, but now Elon has $100b in cash, and can "solve the world's problems".
$100b divided by the world's 8 billion people is $12
If you were in charge, several of the most innovative industrial companies in the world would be destroyed, hundreds of thousands out of work, and space would again close to human civilization for another generation.
But everyone on earth could have one nice meal and you could revel in your altruism.
parents: "move out"
girlfriend: “quit being such a loser”
boss: "work harder"
claude: "uber for dogs (the dogs are the drivers) is a great idea, you should absolutely pursue it"
