🇫🇷Some experiences stay with you forever. 🇫🇷 Today I had the pleasure of sharing lunch with a former student and several wonderful colleagues from L’Académie Française, and it reminded me just how special Virginia’s Governor’s World Language Academies truly are. From 2019 to 2021, I had the honor of serving as Director of L’Académie Française. It remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Watching talented students live, learn, and communicate entirely in French, and seeing the confidence they gained in just three weeks, was nothing short of inspiring. Since 1987, Virginia has offered these remarkable residential academies to the Commonwealth’s most motivated world language students. The program includes French, German, Spanish, Latin, and Japanese, with French, German, and Spanish operating as full-immersion academies and Japanese and Latin providing immersive language and cultural experiences. More than 10,850 students have participated over the years. One of the most extraordinary aspects of the academies is the students’ commitment. For three weeks, they voluntarily disconnect from their phones, social media, and personal technology to fully immerse themselves in language, culture, and community. The expectation is clear: possession or use of a phone results in immediate dismissal from the academy. In today’s always-connected world, that level of commitment is almost unheard of, and these students embrace it. Virginia’s Governor’s World Language Academies are among the nation’s most distinctive statewide language immersion programs, demonstrating what is possible when students are challenged to step outside their comfort zones and fully engage with another language and culture. The program is funded through state and local partnerships so it’s absolutely free for accepted students.🥳 Reconnecting with a former student and colleagues today reminded me that while the academy lasts only three weeks, the friendships, confidence, and global perspective gained there last a lifetime.
