I only read the headline. I don’t subscribe to that publication: “Lise Klaveness […] calls on Gianni Infantino to admit decision to suspend USA striker’s ban was an error” If this is the main message, then to me it smacks of politicking ahead of the FIFA leadership election. A way more constructing message is: (1) to release the full details of how the decision was made, and (2) for the creation of official channels to appeal red card decisions mid-tournament. We don’t want these situations again. But there are way better conversations to have than simply scoring points, regardless of what we think of Infantino.

@talks_michael As far as I’m aware, the proposal was roundly rejected. And it was for the 2028 edition, not the 2027 one. It went from not happening in 2028…to happening in 2027? What the hell happened in the space of 3 weeks? I need to see the primary source, because this makes no sense

Every region will support a 64 team World Cup so long as they are the big winners of the expansion. UEFA will want way more because they barely got any expansion to 48. CONMEBOL will want to push it all the way to the max. CAF and AFC will say they have half of all the federations in world football anyway. It’ll be a standoff. And there’s no way it will get resolved in 4yrs. Maybe for 2034, there might be something.

It’s a 10 federation region. They already have 6 qualifying automatically and 1 playoff spot. In a 64 team World Cup, you can bet the house that they’re looking for at least 9 qualification spots and 1 playoff spot. Which would make a farce of qualification. Otherwise there’s no other reason for CONMEBOL to be advocating for 64 teams. Once they realise that won’t be accepted by the other FIFA members, they’ll become a lot quieter. 😂

What you’re proposing is just arithmetic and slot selections. That’s not the point 😂 The FIFA Council is VERY political. There are debates. There’s prize money split. A little bit of corruption too. Proposals and counter proposals. Compromises in return for something else (e.g. a World Cup bid). It’s not an algorithmic exercise. CONMEBOL are looking to push the envelope as far as possible. And if CONMEBOL are pushing a 64 team World Cup to pretty much get all the teams qualified…it ain’t happening

@Arifalphin @talks_michael That’s in the past system. In 2017, they ratified the 48 team format. As part of that vote, they decided that World Cup hosts still qualify automatically, with their slot taken from their confederation's quota.
