The NHS Says Women's Privacy And Dignity Are Not Sufficient Reason To Keep Biological Males Off Their Wards. Earlier this month a biological male was admitted to a hospital in Cardiff, deemed at risk of self-harm, and performed a sex act in front of nurses. The prosecution described it using the phrase her penis. The individual, a 62-year-old Falklands veteran now known as Paula Stanton, pleaded guilty and has been jailed. West London NHS Trust updated its trans policy in April 2026, after the Supreme Court ruling, after the Equality and Human Rights Commission confirmed that a Gender Recognition Certificate does not change legal sex for Equality Act purposes, and after that case. The updated policy would still admit Paula Stanton to a women's ward. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously in April 2025 that sex under the Equality Act means biological sex. That ruling is one year old. The EHRC confirmed its consequences in terms that could not be clearer: a person's legal sex is the one recorded at birth. Obtaining a GRC does not change your legal sex for Equality Act purposes. West London NHS Trust's updated policy says individual patient admissions are determined by legal gender, which it defines to include those holding a GRC. The trust has read the ruling. It has chosen to defy it. The specific language in the policy is worth reading carefully. Staff should not ask patients to produce their GRC. Patients do not have to inform staff they hold one. This means a woman on a women-only mental health ward at St Bernard's Hospital has no mechanism to establish whether the person in the bed next to her is biologically male. The policy has been designed so that the information which would allow her to exercise her legal rights cannot be obtained. One campaigner described the documents as full of complicated phrases designed to baffle people into thinking they're getting single-sex spaces when they are not. The policy goes further still. It states explicitly that the privacy and dignity of women is not reason to exclude a trans-identifying male patient from a women's ward. That sentence was written by NHS administrators, reviewed by legal advisers, approved by a trust board and published as official policy. It does not claim reluctant compliance with a legal requirement. It states that the privacy and dignity of women in hospital are insufficient grounds for protection. That is institutional preference, not legal obligation. St Bernard's Hospital has a women-only mental health unit. Women on mental health wards are among the most vulnerable patients in the NHS. Many will be there as a direct consequence of trauma including sexual assault. The West London policy says that access to a support group for survivors of sexual assault may justify exclusion where a trans service user has a sexual offending history. It does not say anything about exclusion where no offending history exists. The Cardiff case involved no prior recorded offending history. Stanton was admitted as a risk to self, not to others. Bridget Phillipson has held the EHRC code of practice since September 2025. It was not laid in Parliament until last month. It is not yet in force. The trust updated its policy in April and says it will update it again when NHS England provides guidance. NHS England is waiting for the Government. The Government is waiting for no publicly stated reason. Baroness Falkner, who oversaw the drafting of the code, said the delay is political. The West London policy is what that political delay looks like inside a hospital ward. Claire Coutinho called it astonishing that an NHS trust has adopted this unlawful policy. The more precise description is unsurprising. When the minister responsible for implementing a Supreme Court ruling withholds the guidance that would require compliance, institutions fill the vacuum with their own preferences. The vacuum was created deliberately. The policy is its consequence. Paula Stanton.

Homelessness is not a problem that is easy to solve but I don’t see any way in which this will help. I’m wondering if there will be any boundaries at all? Will there be any town centre rules - can people set up camp in covered shop doorways and not be moved on? In parks? When it’s described as being decriminalised it sounds as though people can be arrested and even put in prison but if that were the case we wouldn’t have the crisis. If the only outcome of this is that decriminalising it means people can sheep in any public space (assuming trespass rules would apply to setting up a tent on a garden) then places such as our town centres could potentially become tented cities?

@PolitlcsUK Sounds like an admission from Labour that they've run out of homes for people. And with thousands arriving in boats every week it'll obviously only get worse.

It almost feels as though King Charles III is actively self-sabotaging the monarchy. I struggle to understand it any other way. Why would he so willingly move away from the foundations that Queen Elizabeth II spent more than 70 years protecting and preserving? She understood something fundamental: the monarchy survives because it stands for continuity, duty, tradition, and service not because it chases modern trends or tries to reinvent itself to please the mood of the day. That was her legacy. That was her strength. So why depart so dramatically from that model? The more the monarchy drifts from what made it respected, the more it risks weakening the very institution it is supposed to protect. And that raises a deeply uncomfortable question: Is this modernisation… or slow self-destruction?

36-year-old Damian Watson has been jailed for five years and six months after posing as an Uber driver and kidnapping and sexually abusing a woman in Liverpool. In April, he picked up a woman in the Anfield area while she was waiting for an Uber. She believed he was her driver and got into his white Mercedes van. Instead of taking her home, he drove her to quiet alleyways in Bootle. When she asked where they were, he told her, “We’re in Bootle now, love.” He then stopped the van, acted aggressively, and ordered her to remove her top, refusing to let her leave. The woman felt forced to comply.Damian also filmed the incident. The woman pretended to be unwell in order to try to escape, which caused him to start driving again. She managed to make a silent 999 call and contact her boyfriend. Police tracked the van and arrested him. He admitted to kidnapping and causing a person to engage in sexual activity against their will.
