‘For a man Bakhle describes as useful to the British, Savarkar had a difficult time of it. He was warned repeatedly, denied the ability to write under his own name, had his detention renewed across five successive terms, had his newspaper banned, and was left with social reform as the only subject he could openly discuss. This raises a question: if the British were so certain of Savarkar’s utility, why did they withhold his full release for 13 years? A politically active Savarkar, free to build an organisation and address audiences directly, would have opposed Gandhi and the Muslims to far greater effect than by writing pseudonymous articles in a small Marathi paper. If the government was pleased with his output, which included the revolutionary standpoint in his articles, it could have accepted, even welcomed, an out-in-the-open Savarkar. It did not. The full release came only in 1937, at which point Bakhle’s narrative ends.’ Apratim Tripathi (@apratim1998), research fellow working on VD Savarkar at the Accelerating India Fellowship, reviews Janaki Bakhle’s ‘Savarkar and the Making of Hindutva' in our latest.
📜Rebellion in the Raj | The Women Who Fought for Freedom | Chapter 7: Kanaklata Barua At just 17, Kanaklata Barua marched towards the Gohpur Police Station carrying the tricolour and a fearless resolve to see India free. When British forces opened fire on the peaceful procession, Kanaklata refused to let the flag fall. Her sacrifice, and that of fellow freedom fighter Mukunda Kakoti, became a powerful symbol of courage and resistance in Assam. ✨From Kanaklata to Uda Devi, Velu Nachiyar, Phulo-Jhano, Gaidinliu and countless others, the story of India’s freedom is also the story of women who stood up, fought back and refused to surrender. Their courage lives on…. @MinOfCultureGoI @vikramsampath @BhaleRasika #RebellionInTheRaj #KanaklataBarua #IndianHistory #FreedomStruggle #WomenInHistory #QuitIndiaMovement #AssamHistory #FIHCR

@potterly_head @Titikshatvam @BharatUnsc42470 thank you so much @potterly_head
This is extremely kind of you, @Titikshatvam, and it means more to me than words can describe. Thank you for such generous words and, more importantly, for the warmth and sincerity behind them. Truly grateful. 🙏🏽
Bharat Unscripted doesn’t merely recount the past, it restores dignity, clarity, and truth to the story of our land. In an age of distorted narratives, your work gently yet firmly reclaims what was always ours. The civilizational depth, the continuity, and the quiet strength of
My podcast, Bharat Unscripted, has reached its first year. Grateful🙏🏻
📜 Rebellion in the Raj | The Women who Fought for Freedom | Chapter 6: Rani Gaidinliu Rani Gaidinliu was only 16 years old when she took on one of the world's most powerful empires. After the execution of her mentor, Haipou Jadonang, she stepped forward to lead a resistance against British rule, inspiring her people to defend their land, culture, and freedom. Arrested at a young age and imprisoned for 14 years, her spirit remained unbroken. Her courage later earned her the title "Rani" from Jawaharlal Nehru. Her story reminds us that leadership is not measured by age, but by conviction. Swipe through to discover the remarkable journey of one of India's youngest freedom fighters and the enduring legacy she left behind. @MinOfCultureGoI @vikramsampath @BhaleRasika
FIHCR Fellowship | Field Notes 📍Cellular Jail, Port Blair (now Sri Vijaya Puram), Andaman A Decade in Kala Pani The walls of Cellular Jail confined a man, but they could not imprison memory, conviction, or the idea of freedom. Today, visitors see a preserved cell of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. While history asks us to see something more - nearly a decade of endurance, the resilience of a political prisoner, and one chapter in the collective sacrifice of thousands who passed through Kala Pani. This field visit by FIHCR Fellow Aruni Chauhan forms part of the research project, "The Andamans and After: A Brief History of Select Revolutionaries, Their Thought, and the Legacy of Colonial Incarceration," exploring how the experiences of incarceration shaped both individuals and the broader history of India's freedom movement. Swipe to step inside one of the most enduring stories of Cellular Jail. @vikramsampath
📜Rebellion in the Raj | The Women who Fought for Freedom | Chapter 5: Madam Bhikaji Cama Some battles are fought on the battlefield. Others are fought with courage, conviction, and an unwavering voice. More than a century before India became independent, Madam Bhikaji Cama carried India's aspirations onto the world stage. At a time when the British claimed to speak for India, she declared that India would one day speak for itself. Her courage reminds us that the struggle for freedom was not confined to India's borders; it echoed across continents through the efforts of extraordinary individuals who refused to be silenced. ➡️Swipe through to discover how one woman transformed exile into resistance and made history with a flag that became a symbol of hope. @MinOfCultureGoI @IN_Archives @mygovindia @incredibleindia @vikramsampath @ichr_1972

FIHCR Fellowship | Field Notes 📍Cellular Jail, Port Blair (now Sri Vijaya Puram), Andaman The Names They Could Not Erase... Kala Pani witnessed the suffering of thousands of Indian freedom fighters whose names deserve to be remembered for their courage and resilience. Among them were Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Ganesh (Babarao) Damodar Savarkar, Bhai Parmanand, Barindra Kumar Ghose, Ullaskar Dutta, Sachindranath Sanyal, Indu Bhushan Roy, Baba Bhan Singh, Pandit Ram Rakha, Mahavir Singh, Mohan Kishore Namadas, Mohit Moitra, Trailokyanath Chakravarty, Nani Gopal Mukherjee, and Hridoy Ranjan Das, alongside countless others from every corner of India. Inside these walls, prisoners endured forced labour, impossible daily quotas, solitary confinement, flogging, standing handcuffs, and the gallows, punishments intended to crush their spirit. Yet, they could not extinguish their resolve. This field visit forms part of FIHCR Fellow Aruni Chauhan's research project, "The Andamans and After: A Brief History of Select Revolutionaries, Their Thought, and the Legacy of Colonial Incarceration," which explores the lives, ideas, and enduring legacy of those who endured colonial imprisonment. FIHCR Fellowship | Field Notes 📍Cellular Jail, Port Blair (now Sri Vijaya Puram), Andaman What does it mean to walk through a place built to erase hope? Today, the Cellular Jail bears witness to one of the darkest chapters of India's freedom struggle. These walls once held thousands of India's freedom fighters in complete isolation, where every cell was designed to sever hope, silence voices, and break the human spirit. As part of the Sir Jadunath Sarkar Fellowship for Indian History (2025-26), our Fellow Aruni Chauhan visited the Cellular Jail to engage with the site as a living archive. This field visit forms part of Aruni's research project, "The Andamans and After: A Brief History of Select Revolutionaries, Their Thought, and the Legacy of Colonial Incarceration." Through on-site documentation and historical inquiry, the research seeks to better understand the experiences of revolutionaries who endured incarceration in the Andamans and the enduring legacy of colonial imprisonment. In the coming weeks, we will share more moments from this field research, bringing to light the landscapes, archives, and histories that continue to shape our understanding of India's freedom struggle. @vikramsampath @SatyajeetOjha6
what a fantastic thread by @risinghinduness !!!
In 1934, Savarkar was the President of the Ratnagiri Hindu sabha. What Savarkar did with a Muslim woman will shock you. This chapter of history has been deliberately hidden until today. Read the full account below. 🧵
@Titikshatvam thank you so much for listening in. 🙏🏻
