I was born after the USSR collapsed, so I mostly heard about it from my mom and dad. It's funny to realize how similar the cultural hostility toward ambition is in both the late USSR and modern Europe. No surprise: if you make fighting ambition part of your national identity, you're dooming your country to inevitable decay and, eventually, collapse. It's like building AI where the key objective is to perform 30% better than the average model on the market, instead of aiming for the next breakthrough. It would be the most stupid thing in the world, yet some people really believe it's the right recipe for an entire union of countries.. where the stakes are, ultimately, the survival of our whole civilization. Compare that to China, also a self-declared socialist country, where parents do the opposite, pushing their kids to be the best in their peer group and beyond. Then it becomes clear why modern China is on another level of progress compared to Europe.
