Employers ask me why I recommend paying independent physicians at 100% of billed charges. Here's why: 1. No facility fee. 2. No hospital outpatient referral for labs. 3. No hospital outpatient referral for imaging. 4. Typically more time spent with the patient. By doing this, you eliminate the friction to care. Employees don't stay sick because they can't afford to go to the doctor. They don't come to work sick and infect your workforce. They don't miss work for days and leave a gap in your team and they don't end up at the ER, or worse, inpatient for an illness. Most of all, it's a huge benefit for employee retention. People can disagree with me but after 22 years of battle testing plan designs and reviewing actual claims data, this works. A 100% payment to an independent physician for an office visit beats adding a $400 facility fee, increased lab costs and increased imaging cost every time. The cherry on top? It keeps our independent physicians doing what they do best instead being eaten by the beast (vertical integration).
