In a surprise shift, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink has backed away from his earlier strong support for a rapid global energy transition to wind and solar. Fink says intermittent wind and solar alone cannot be relied on to power the rapid rise of AI data centres, now being built across the United States and elsewhere. Without sufficient firm, dispatchable power, he warns the world will face significant power shortages. This view aligns roughly with his previous comments linked to the World Economic Forum at Davos in early 2026. 'The world is going to be short power, and to power these data companies you cannot have just this intermittent power like wind and solar,' he said. Fink says dispatchable power is essential because data centres 'can’t turn off and on'. This marks a move from BlackRock’s previous strong focus on climate risk, net-zero alignment and the energy transition toward what Fink calls 'energy pragmatism'. Renewable construction (especially solar) are still increasing, but without major advances in storage they cannot keep the lights on reliably on their own—particularly now facing surging electricity demand for AI data centres, electrification and industry. Fink stressed the need to retain and expand oil gas and nuclear alongside renewables. He also highlights natural gas’s reliability and the risk of higher prices or shortfalls if supply fails to keep pace with demand. He appears to emphasise affordability, energy abundance and security rather than rapid fossil-fuel phase-outs. BlackRock still invests substantially in wind-solar and transition-related assets, while underscoring the limits of intermittency versus the need for firm power. The shift emphasises the limits of intermittency while facing rising demand, rather than a wholesale abandonment of clean-energy investment.

A new study reveals the Great Barrier Reef is thriving. Evaluating 38 years of data from the Australian Institute of Marine Science, coral cover is now at its highest level since monitoring began. Published in the International Journal of Global Warming, the paper reads, "there is no consistent correlation between rising temperatures and reduced coral cover, with most corals demonstrating rapid recovery." The findings directly contradict the narrative of irreversible decline. Bleaching is merely cyclical and, crucially, recoverable. The Great Barrier Reef is thriving, and the data prove it.

Landfill is becoming the default graveyard for the fading renewable-energy green dream. Millions of solar panels are already hitting their end-of-life cycle, and the world is completely unprepared for the toxic avalanche due in 2030. By 2050, the International Renewable Energy Agency says it will get much worse, with more than 200 million tonnes of cumulative solar panel waste globally. Plus, there will be additional tens of millions of tonnes of decommissioned wind turbine components. Turbine blades are virtually indestructible. The industry has claimed solar panels and turbines were ‘95% recyclable’. Technically, they are—because they are made of glass, aluminium, and copper. But the reality is a different story. In the US, it costs roughly $20 to $30 to properly disassemble and recycle a single panel, compared to just $1 to $5 to dump it in a landfill. Because there is little financial incentive to disassemble and recycle parts, around 90% of decommissioned panels in the US and a large share of turbine blades worldwide go straight into the ground. These devices are highly complex. A solar panel is an industrial ‘sandwich’ bound tightly by heavy polymers. Extracting the microscopic amounts of valuable silver and high-purity silicon requires energy-intensive chemical and thermal processing. When crushed or left to fracture in landfills, heavy metals like lead and cadmium leach into surrounding soil and groundwater, turning ‘clean energy’ into a multi-generational hazardous waste problem. The crisis is accelerating faster than models ever predicted. As solar cells degrade and newer, cheaper panels hit the market, consumers and solar farms are ripping out functional systems a decade early to repower and upgrade. The dream of renewable energy from sunlight and wind has, in reality, created an endless loop of unrecyclable industrial trash.

Recycling is possible, but it requires more energy, water, chemical processing and specialized facilities. Solar panels can be labeled "clean," but only if you ignore the intensive mining, extreme heat, toxic chemistry, manufacturing waste, disposal, and also the short life cycle (of just 10 to 15 years).

Forget data centers for a minute. Tesla and SpaceX (and xAI) have just confirmed that they are building Terafab, a joint chip factory. The scale is simply jaw-dropping. Two thoughts come to mind: 1. The chip shortage driving it is real, and both companies repeatedly said so themselves.
