Everyone wants to talk about whether the economy is strong or weak. I look at it a little differently. I look at the people living in it. Today, more than 1 in 5 Americans over 65 are still in the workforce. Some are there because they want to be. Many are there because retirement no longer covers the cost of living. I remember when my own grandmother told me that just one of my grandfather's medications costs $800 a month. One medicine. At the same time, about half of Americans under 30 are still living at home because buying a home, paying rent, and simply getting started has become increasingly out of reach. In contrast, my parents gave me luggage for my high school graduation. The message couldn't have been clearer: they had absolutely no expectation I'd be living at home much longer. Think about what this all says. We don’t have a laziness problem, we have an affordability one. One generation can't afford to retire. Another can't afford to launch. That also isn't a Republican problem or a Democrat problem even though everyone wants to blame the other. It's an American problem. The strength of our economy shouldn't be measured only by the stock market or GDP. It should be measured by whether young Americans can build a prosperous future and whether older Americans can retire with the dignity they earned. Right now, too many are struggling to do either. We must do better.

Americans should take this personally. Wanting Flo to play doesn't make us biased—it makes us fair. The red card never fit the moment, and playing a man down for most of the second half was punishment enough. FIFA got this one right. The bigger story? Some in Europe still can't stand seeing the U.S. succeed in football. They're used to America getting the short end of the stick. This time, justice won. This red card suspension has shown me that there is no way countries outside of America could handle college football.

The Balogun decision might feel shady, but it definitely is the correct ruling. It went from not being a foul on the field to a red card while not following proper VAR protocols. Bottom line: FIFA should be able to review cards and suspensions after the fact similar to the NBA with techs/flagrants. #USMNT

lots of people who don't watch football weighing in on the Balogun thing. let me summarize yes it was a wrongly-granted red during the game. it wasn't serious foul play or a reckless tackle. he was playing the ball. he was unlucky and the intent was not there. anyone watching it live agreed - never a red. it shouldn't have even been a VAR intervention because it wasn't an obvious error. the yellow card originally granted was more than enough. so on the merits - not a red card, not even close. now, can the red card be appealed or suspended in the World Cup finals? yes, this is an explicit written rule, FIFA's Article 27. Ronaldo notably benefited from this in this very World Cup, avoiding a 2 match suspension. Otamendi of Argentina and Caicedo of Ecuador were also due to miss their opening WC matches and had those red card suspensions waived as well. so this kind of thing absolutely happens. there absolutely is precedent. what's the difference? Balogun's red card and suspension happened _during_ the World Cup rather than in qualifiers. that's the only difference. now do red cards get appealed in club competition? all the time. in fact, every major league has red card appeals, because red cards are sometimes incorrectly granted! no one who watches football thinks "red cards given on the pitch are absolutely final and incorruptible". red cards get appealed all the time. they are appealable in: - the English Premier League - the FA cup - La Liga - Copa del Rey - Serie A - Bundesliga - Ligue Un - MLS this is how I know so many of those weighing in don't watch football, because red card appeals are incredibly common in club competition. in fact they are universal, aside from CL. why are international tournaments like the World Cup different? for the very simple reason that there isn't as much time in between matches to have a formal appeals process. (whereas in club you have a week between matches). it's not like the WC or CL have some kind of philosophy that refs are absolutely incorruptible. Anyone who watched Italy v South Korea in 2002 or England Germany 2010 knows that refs can fail terribly. could the FIFA WC add an appeals process for red cards? easily, and they probably will. this incident could well be the catalyst. and when it happens, and the game gets fairer overall, you can thank Folarin Balogun and President Donald J Trump.

All former FIFA-certified referees raise your hands. 🙋 That's right I used to both play & ref soccer. Now I mostly just mock it. Until they mess w/ Team USA. This picture of the collision between Balogun & the B&H player looks awful, but it's complete garbage. Wrong angle to see what really happened. Balogun was closer to the ball and the B&H player came from his right AND behind initiating the contact. He caused his own suffering. The ref got it right initially as a no call. They were both playing the ball. Even in a sport known for pitifully lame flopping sometimes two dudes just crash into each other and do some actual damage. Doesn't mean there was a foul. The replay guy then saw an opportunity to take the Americans down a notch and the ref bought in and made an egregious red card ejection. If any call was made it should have been against the B&H player who came from behind and out of the sight line of Balogun. The outrage now is "How dare the Americans get this absurd attempt to weaken them overturned". Taking a player out of a once in a lifetime game and tournament should be an exceedingly high bar. This was not. The people pretending to care about the rules are really mad the Americans aren't getting screwed over. It's a common sentiment and all around the world hating Americans for being the Biggest, Baddest and Best is as much a national sport as Soccer Ball. I've lived overseas for six years and traveled to several dozen countries. Furriners love to hate on us. I'm not saying it's all underserved, I'm just saying it's not new and it's everywhere. I can't blame them, we're barely 250 years old and we have accomplished more than any country in history. We have invented more amazing things, freed more people from tyranny and lifted more people from poverty and that stings, especially for the Euros who think they own our history. They do, the part that we left and left behind. The part we are making now they can only watch and be chafed about. Because they can't even come close. So they were salivating at knocking a US star out of play on a BS call. Sorry Jacques Belgique, you're going to have to take on a full US squad. @YourAnonTV It was a soft red, and there have already been deferred suspensions in this WC. This happens in football everywhere, red card suspensions get dropped. This is just outing those who don't pay attention to the sport and are just seeking another outlet for their TDS I dont get the
