The faster technology moves, the more I think about Bezos' question What won't change in the next 10 years? Things I've been writing down over time: - Humans will always need shelter, food, energy, and healthcare. - The desire for ownership and the accumulation of wealth. - The physical world will move more slowly than the digital one. - Every increase in technological capability, especially AI, will require more energy. - People and businesses will continue to need access to capital. - Capital will continue to seek returns that exceed inflation. - Underwriting methods evolve, but demand for credit (loans) is persistent. - Trust remains scarce and becomes increasingly valuable as content, code, and fraud become cheaper. - Verified identities and reputation becomes more important as information becomes abundant and synthetic. - Long-term wealth creation and dynastic (multi-generational) thinking predate modern technology, and will persist. - Coordination and transaction costs never fully disappear; market friction will continue to justify the existence of firms and intermediaries. - People will continue to compete for status. - Consumers will pay a premium for products and services that confer status. - Time remains fixed at 24 hours per day. - But attention is a finite resource and an enduring constraint. - Products that credibly save time (or enable delegation) have a perpetual market. - Inaccessible, proprietary data will be a persistent moat. The more inaccessible and difficult to aggregate, the deeper the moat. - People want accountability, recourse, and clearly identifiable responsibility when things go wrong. - Regulation consistently lags technological innovation. - Compliance requirements, licensing, and regulatory moats persist even when machines can perform the underlying task. - Local knowledge remains valuable and difficult to replicate. - Heterogeneous markets (like real estate) continue to reward people with deep contextual understanding. - Incumbent organizations tend to underinvest in disrupting their own businesses, which always creates opportunities for challengers. Bezos' insight on what wouldn't change in 10 years was "Customers will always want lower prices and faster delivery." It's boring/ true, but I think that's the point. Everything we build today can and will be rebuilt more cheaply, faster by someone else. Build on the invariants, not the trends. What have I missed?

Most ambitious people I know are mentally cooked, by the combination of infinite optionality and infinite comparison. They’re torn between climbing the corporate ladder, launching a startup, becoming a solopreneur, buying an SMB, moving to NYC, moving to London, moving to Dubai, staying close to family, optimizing for money, optimizing for freedom, optimizing for status, optimizing for peace. Then they open TikTok and see some 22yo flying business class like it’s nothing, or casually spending their monthly salary at a beach club. The issue is not just envy. It’s the feeling that there are 10,000 possible lives available, every one has someone younger apparently winning at it, and somehow you might be choosing the wrong one.

The most cooked here aren't even the normies. It's the most ambitious / driven people. The normie sees some 23yo making $70k/month from Dubai and thinks “lol fake” or “good for him” and moves on. The ambitious person can’t. He starts reverse-engineering it: What is he selling?

What you do in private always shows in public.Reading shows in conversations. Your workouts show in your physique. Your diet shows in your energy. Your discipline shows in your confidence. Your focus shows in your results. You are what you cultivate when no one is watching.

I’m convinced that the most underrated trait in life is the willingness to change your mind. Certainty isn't strength. The most impressive people change their minds often in response to new information. It’s a software update. The goal isn't to be right. It's to find the truth.

To the Americans: I've travelled all over the world. I've familiarized myself with many places, and met many people. And I'm a Canadian, although I’m privileged to reside once again in the States. And here's something I've noticed, and it’s a key element of America's continuing greatness: You bloody Americans value success, and you believe in its existence. This is something that doesn't really happen anywhere else in the world. Even in other free democracies—the United Kingdom; Finland, Sweden, and Norway; Australia, New Zealand and Canada; Germany, France, and the Netherlands (great countries all)—a counterproductive cynicism too often reigns. Success is equated with exploitation. Ambition is looked upon with contempt. This happens sometimes in the United States too—particularly among the miserable progressives, who confuse their resentment, ingratitude and unearned skepticism with wisdom. But in your great country, by and large, striving is admired and success celebrated. This means that more people strive and succeed in the US than anywhere else. And it's increasingly obvious. You remain stunningly more innovative and productive than any people anywhere else on the planet. And so I say, as all should who are fortunate enough to live in the western world, let alone America: Thank God for the United States. Thank God for the wisdom of its founders. Thank God for its faith in the free market and in the natural rights of man. Happy birthday, you damn Yankees and Southerners. Long may your admirable country dominate the world. Long may your freedom and hope provide an example to those suffering everywhere at the hands of their malevolent states. There have been 4 major revolutions in the past 250 years: American, French, Russian, and Chinese. Only one led to individual rights and prosperity. The others led to mass death and tyranny. The US revolution was unique because it said two things: 1. Our rights come from God not from the govt. 2. Humans are power -hungry so we need to limit govt power. So the next time someone attacks the nation of one revolution that succeeded and recycles the the idea of those that miserably failed, you can ask them: are you ignorant, or malicious?

It's crazy to think that just 80 years after we literally nuked their cities, Japan is one of our closest friends and is commemorating our Independence Day with a fireworks show, while Palestinians are still mad that their great great grandparents had to move a few miles after losing a war they started and now need to murder as many people as possible for the rest of time.
