@matscaf @bigpicsoccer A number of concepts are being mixed up here. The proposed rule favours strikers vs defenders, and offense (side with the ball) vs defense (side defending). But it is likely to penalize aggressive defenses more than conservative ones, and so result in less attacking play.

@matscaf @bigpicsoccer Understanding great, thx. Lowering the line does not automatically make it easier to defend, as you are giving up ground to the offense. If the new rule makes it more difficult to press high, that's good for the offense (side with the ball), not the defense.

@matscaf @bigpicsoccer If lowering the defensive line was always better for the defense they should be doing it already. They don'tneed to wait for a rule change to do something that benefits them when it's already allowed.

@matscaf @bigpicsoccer I agree with that. Favouring attackers too much is likely to discourage advanced defensive lines. But that's not the same as to claim that attackers are not benefitted, which is what op claimed.

@crcarrick @bigpicsoccer I agree that it's too much. But I also think that VAR effectively pushed the line 1 or 2 ft back (no more positions "in line" with the opponent), and I would like to see that reversed.

@crcarrick @bigpicsoccer Plenty of defenses are choosing not to implement a low block because they don't think it favours them. Doesn't matter that some do. Restricting defensive options doesn't favour defenses, it penalizes some and is at best indifferent for others.

@crcarrick @bigpicsoccer I mean, not all the time, or else you wouldn't say they would happen more often. Wenger's offside benefits attackers, as it takes away options from their opposition. It penalizes high defensive lines, but that's a different matter.

@ruhlax_guy @kingharis @jessesingal Changing the current system to a stopwatch would have advantages and disadvantages, and it's probably too big of a change to the rules to be worth the minor improvement it's likely to have at most.
