To those mocking the Chief Justice's remark, ask yourselves: what exactly do you expect the Supreme Court to do? Suspend its constitutional work and watch hours of videos every time a petitioner claims there has been police excess? Mocking a Chief Justice for insisting on judicial discipline misunderstands the constitutional role of the Supreme Court. Justice is delivered by following due process, not by yielding to public pressure or social media outrage. The SC is a constitutional court, not an investigative agency or a television newsroom. Its duty is to decide cases according to law, not to conduct real-time fact-finding based on video clips presented across the Bar. If every allegation required the CJI to personally examine raw footage before hearing the legal issues, the Court would grind to a halt.

@CMOTamilnadu completely agree that this is a genuine and reasonable demand. While travelling from Chennai to Trichy, my fellow passenger was from Goa. She was extremely anxious throughout the journey because she was struggling to find accommodation in Velankanni. She was travelling with her elderly parents, and her mother was undergoing treatment for cancer, which made the uncertainty even more distressing.

One would hope the DMK takes a hard look at the performance of its legal team. This is not the first time its cases have been dismissed, with both the party and their Government facing judicial criticism and rebukes. @CMOTamilnadu⁠ should also disclose how many lakhs of taxpayers’ money were spent on legal counsel during the DMK’s tenure, only for many cases to end in defeat.

The rule of law requires an objective assessment of the alleged offence, not a blanket rule that arrests are always right or always wrong. If a statement amounts to criminal intimidation, public mischief, threats, targeted harassment, or other offences recognised by law, the police are entitled to investigate and, where legally justified, make an arrest. The defamation route is simply meaningless, as it takes ages.

Congratulations on your new assignment. Had you persuaded the Congress high command, before the Assembly elections, to forge an alliance with TVK, the Congress would likely have secured at least 40 Assembly seats. Both of these statements are true: i) A passport is issued because the Government has satisfied itself that you are an Indian citizen.If your citizenship is ever challenged in court on grounds such as fraud or illegal acquisition, the final legal determination is made under the Citizenship Act, not merely by producing a passport. ii) For ordinary citizens, an Indian passport remains the Republic's most trusted and authoritative document of nationality. The legal clarification does not diminish its everyday value; it simply recognises that, in exceptional legal disputes, no single document is immune from judicial scrutiny.No doubt the MEA official added to lots of confusion.
