💜💚 Down Syndrome Awareness Month – “Different, Not Less”
Every child deserves the chance to thrive. Yet in Ghana, many children and families of persons with Down syndrome face stigma, limited access to education, and few opportunities for inclusion.
At the Roshelle Brago Boakye Foundation (ROBBFOUNDATION), we are working to change that — through awareness campaigns, educational workshops, and empowerment programs.

The launch of the 16 interegional Mental Health awareness Tour, organized by Heart for Disabled Foundation in collaboration with RobbFoundation, was successfully held in Accra, bringing together high-level stakeholders to champion mental health and disability advocacy.
The event was graced by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, representatives from the Mental Health Authority, officials from the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, and several other key partners. Participants used the platform to highlight the urgent need for stronger mental health systems, increased awareness, and greater investment in community-level interventions.
In their remarks, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to:
Prioritizing mental health in Ghana’s health agenda.
Strengthening collaboration among government, civil society, and service providers.
Advancing inclusive policies that protect the rights of persons with mental health conditions and disabilities.
Expanding access to psychosocial support services.
Speaking at the event, representatives of Heart for Disabled Foundation and Robb Foundation emphasized that the tour is not only about awareness but also about action. “This tour demonstrates that when we stand together, we can break barriers, reduce stigma, and create a more inclusive society where persons with mental health conditions and disabilities live with dignity,” they stated.

As part of our continuous commitment to advancing the rights and well-being of persons with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities in Ghana, ROBBFOUNDATION participated in today's conference on Unpaid Care Work and Disability Inclusion organised by CLCD ,CDS and partners. The conference forms a pivotal part of ongoing research and advocacy efforts to address the disproportionate burden of unpaid care work, which is borne primarily by women and girls caring for children with developmental disabilities.
Our participation aligned with our organizational mission of promoting inclusive education, social justice, and gender equality through evidence-based advocacy and multi-stakeholder engagement.
As a representative stakeholder, ROBBFOUNDATION made key inputs during the discussions, emphasizing the following:
1. Evidence from the Field
Shared case studies from our programs that highlight the economic and emotional strain experienced by caregivers of children with Down syndrome in Ghana.
Presented insights on how the lack of support systems contributes to caregiver burnout, financial instability, and reduced access to education for children with disabilities.
2. Policy Recommendations
Advocated for policies that recognize, value, and reduce unpaid care work through targeted interventions such as caregiver stipends, social protection measures, and access to community-based childcare support.
Called for the integration of disability-sensitive perspectives into Ghana’s gender equality and social protection frameworks.
3. Inclusive Education and Empowerment
Highlighted the urgent need to expand inclusive education policies that reduce caregiver workload while ensuring children with disabilities access quality education.
Proposed skill development and livelihood support programs for mothers of children with developmental disabilities to strengthen economic independence.
Unpaid care work disproportionately affects women and girls, creating gender inequalities and limiting economic participation.
There is strong momentum among stakeholders to mainstream caregiver support into national policy frameworks.
Multi-sectoral collaboration is essential for sustainable solutions, combining education, health, social protection, and labor market reforms.
ROBBFOUNDATION’s active participation in this conference reinforced our role as a key stakeholder in advocating for children with Down syndrome, their families, and caregivers. By contributing evidence, practical recommendations, and alliance-building strategies, we have advanced the collective effort toward policies that ease caregiver burdens, enhance inclusive education, and promote gender equality and social justice in Ghana.

Today, across the world, millions of individuals with Down syndrome are proving every day that they are not defined by limitations. They go to school, excel in sports and arts, work in businesses, and inspire communities. What they need from us is not pity, but opportunity; not judgment, but acceptance; not exclusion, but inclusion.
Unfortunately, stigma and discrimination still exist. Too many families feel isolated, too many children are left out of classrooms, and too many adults with Down syndrome are denied employment. These barriers are not created by their condition — they are created by society. And if society builds barriers, society can also break them down.
Through this campaign, we will:
Educate communities with daily facts and stories that show the true abilities of persons with Down syndrome.
Promote inclusion in schools, workplaces, and communities.
Empower families to advocate for their loved ones with confidence.
Engage policymakers and institutions to create lasting change.
But this movement cannot succeed without you. We need each of you here — government leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, corporate partners, media, and families — to join hands with us. When we stand together, we can change attitudes, break stigma, and open doors of opportunity.
Let us remember that inclusion is not charity; it is justice. Persons with Down syndrome do not need to be “fixed.” They need to be accepted, respected, and given the space to thrive.
As we begin this journey, I invite you to carry this message everywhere you go: Different does not mean less

At the National Disability-Inclusive Coordination Framework Validation Meeting, Mr. Edward Ampratwum, Head of Inclusive Growth & Accountable Governance, emphasized that the framework is a multi-tiered coordination mechanism (national ➡ regional ➡ district) created to unite efforts, reduce duplication, and strengthen collaboration among all stakeholders.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reaffirmed its strong commitment to working with UN agencies, government institutions, civil society, and partners to ensure the framework is not only validated but also fully implemented to deliver lasting impact.
We were proud to stand alongside key stakeholders, including the National Council on Persons with Disability (NCPD), the Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection (MoGCSP), the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), and disability networks across Ghana.
Together, we are building a future where disability inclusion is not just policy but practice. 💜💚
