Families in ELA & Boyle Heights were left exposed when the fire broke out. From what I witnessed, Calls to 211 and 311 went unanswered, and the Pecan Ave center was deserted. The rest of us residents in Commerce, Montebello, and the San Gabriel Valley were also hit hard as thick smoke lingered for days. We should have been warned in time. Instead, our homes filled with toxic fumes, triggering swollen lymph nodes, lung and esophagus pain, migraines, a metallic taste, and burning skin-especially at night. There was no justification for the complete lack of notification or clear information. The neighborhoods closest to the fire were abandoned in hazardous air. Air purifiers and masks should have been rushed to nearby residents in Boyle Heights immediately. Thankfully, our communities stepped up. We went out and checked on those affected the hardest as well as neighbors in the adjacent communities checking on one another, shared resources, bought their own masks and purifiers when they could, and protected children and elders. What remains hard to understand is why air purifiers reached other areas before Boyle Heights, one of the communities most severely impacted by the smoke.
