May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It is transmitted to humans by a bite from an infected tick. Lyme disease can affect multiple body systems, leading to a wide range of symptoms. This month serves as a time to provide education around ticks and lyme disease while promoting preventative measures that you can take to avoid infection in yourself and your pets. Lyme disease (and co-infections) is the fastest growing vector-borne disease in Canada. The Quinte area including Prince Edward County have been deemed an endemic area. The Bay of Quinte & Area Lyme Support Group continues to increase awareness among residents of Prince Edward County and surrounding areas of the seriousness of lyme disease and co-infections. Owen Arthur Jones, a Picton resident and a familiar figure in our community, passed away on December 25, 2021 at the age of 68. For many years Owen took it upon himself to work tirelessly during the spring, summer, and fall to keep the curbs and gutters clear of debris. In the winter months, he made sidewalks passable to pedestrians so that they could safely access businesses along Picton Main Street. Owen valued his independence and privacy, taking great pride in his work with no expectation of recognition, renumeration, or gratitude. In 2022 on behalf of the community, Prince Edward County recognized Owen Jones and his efforts by renaming the annual spring community clean-up in his honour. The tradition continues with the Owen Jones Memorial Community Clean-up taking place on Saturday, April 25. Residents are invited to follow Owen’s example by participating in the clean-up today.
