Once again, the U.S. had approximately 16,700 homicides in 2024. About 187 of them occurred here in DC, meaning over 16,500 people were murdered elsewhere. That figure aligns with broader FBI data that a murder occurred every 31.1 minutes during 2024 here in the U.S.

Alaska, which is about 3,800 times the size of Washington, D.C., yet has roughly the same population, is often considered one of the safest places in the country—people are even paid to live there. Still, 70 people were murdered in 2022 and 56 in 2023. I don’t yet have data for 2024. In Anchorage, a city of fewer than 300,000 people that’s also known for being safe, about 34 people were murdered last year. Around 70 percent of people there own guns—some for protection against bears, others for hunting—yet many are still murdered. The question is: will we take politics out of this and focus on the areas truly affected? Or will we just deploy the National Guard to places that are already secure?

With some of the 150 residents of the Athabascan village of Tanana on the banks of the Yukon 220 river miles from Fairbanks or 6 hours on a seasonal one lane dirt “Pioneer” road. This is one of hundreds of remote Alaskan villages that face unique challenges in accessing health care and nutritious foods. Milk costs more than soda in the only grocery store and the Yukon’s iconic King Salmon fishery is in calamitous collapse so that the tribe has been unable to fish for five years. Im touring these communities all week to learn how Indian Health Services can better meet their needs.

The 2,300 member tribe nets 10,000 salmon each year under this allotment. This year 5,000,000 Salmon will flood the Kenai to spawn in a 50 year record season. Many tribal members still subsist on moose , salmon and berries, but more are turning to processed foods. Earlier in the day I toured the tribe’s Dena’ina Wellness Center which is struggling with diabetes, obesity and heart disease which were unknown prior to the introduction of processed foods.
