In Silicon Valley S2 E7 at 10:28 there’s a line - “Keep at it Claude. Your jobs are not at risk.” Hmm…
Dès qu'on refait. Dès qu'on transmet. Dès qu'on crée.
@Scobleizer Another step forward… into a new dependency model. Short bursts of brilliance, metered like a casino. The house is compute.
@levie AI won’t reduce the work if the machine itself clocks off. Welcome to the new Vegas: developers glued to the terminal, feeding coins into a probabilistic slot machine. The house always wins. The meter is the product.
@DBirker78883 @sama Yep me too. It’s like dining at a buffet and having a server pull your plate halfway through a mouthful.
@marcmakingsense One of my favourites at the NGV ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collec…
POETRY in Code (output from CODEX - doing work) I’m going after useAIChat next. The server side is in good shape now, so the best remaining payoff is shrinking the client hook by extracting one of the bulky responsibilities, ideally without changing the outward behavior at all. Explored 1 file I’ve got a good bounded refactor for the hook: I’m extracting the request-building and attachment-upload pieces into a small helper module so handleSend stops owning transport setup, recording selection, and payload assembly all at once. That should reduce size without changing any of the artifact logic we already stabilized. Created 1 file The helper module is in. I’m rewiring useAIChat to use it now, which should cut a big chunk of inline setup logic out of handleSend and make the remaining code easier to keep clean. One import hunk missed because the file moved a bit since the last pass. I’m reopening the top of the hook and applying the refactor in smaller chunks so we don’t fight the patcher. Explored 1 file I’ve got the exact hook section now. I’m patching the imports and the handleSend setup block in two smaller edits so we keep this surgical and type-safe. Edited 1 file The main extraction is wired in. I’m doing a quick compile check now, and if there are any leftovers they’ll likely just be unused locals or a missed reference from the old inline payload block. Explored 1 search, ran 1 command The extraction is almost certainly good; I can already see the old inline payload code is gone. I’m waiting on tsc now, and if it complains it should just be a small cleanup from the moved variables. Two small type mismatches showed up, both straightforward: the contact lookup was carrying an unused phone field, and the helper needs to handle attachments with a missing uri more defensively. I’m fixing those now. Edited 2 files The refactor itself is fine; those were just typing guardrails. I’m rerunning verification now, and if it’s green we’ll have a smaller useAIChat without changing the behavior of the stabilized pipeline. Ran 3 commands The server tests are still green, and useAIChat is already materially smaller. I’m just waiting for tsc to finish so I can close this pass with the exact impact and what the next smart extraction would be if we keep going. One last type nit: the helper still needs a narrower type around one of the attachment fields. I’m checking the exact line and patching it directly. Edited 1 file, explored 1 file That was the last compile issue. I’m rerunning typecheck now so we can lock in this extraction cleanly. Ran 2 commands The hook extraction made a real dent already: about 340 lines of inline setup/boilerplate came out of useAIChat. I’m waiting on the final typecheck result now, but this is exactly the kind of cleanup that makes the rest of the client path easier to keep stable. I kept going and this was a strong cleanup win. useAIChat is smaller and more focused now. I extracted the request/transport setup into client/lib/ai/chatRequest.ts, which now owns attachment upload, loading-text selection, chat payload assembly, and the “use existing follow-up email draft” shortcut. That let me strip a large amount of inline setup code out of client/hooks/useAIChat.ts without changing the stabilized response/artifact behavior. The impact is real: the diff removed roughly 340 lines of inline logic from useAIChat, and the hook is down to 1076 lines while the extracted helper is 250 lines. The remaining complexity in the hook is now much more concentrated around response handling and persistence, instead of transport setup, payload shaping, and local fallback assembly all being mixed together. Verification is still clean: npx tsc --noEmit --pretty false npm run test:server-ai The next best extraction, if we keep pushing, is the response-processing half of useAIChat: envelope normalization, draft/artifact resolution, and assistant-message construction. That’s the main chunk left keeping the hook large.
The real story in the Persian Gulf right now isn’t just missiles or tankers. It’s markets. The Strait of Hormuz is a structural vulnerability. When flows are threatened, the physical shock is immediate, but the financial repricing is instantaneous. That’s where commodity traders operate. They don’t trade oil. They trade volatility, spreads, and timing. Right now: •Prices are swinging hard intraday •Regional dislocations are opening •Options premiums are exploding For most, this is instability. For traders, it’s product. The edge isn’t just direction. It’s structure: •Arbitraging Brent vs WTI •Pricing regional scarcity •Trading volatility itself •Exploiting gaps between physical and paper markets The fastest players are ingesting shipping data, satellite signals, and geopolitical cues in real time. By the time the news hits, the trade is already on. Profits are concentrating in a small group: commodity houses, hedge funds, and energy desks that sit between physical flows and financial markets. They don’t control the crisis. But they price it. This is the pattern: disruption → volatility → liquidity → profit concentration The Gulf will stabilise. Prices will settle. But the system won’t change. In a world of fragile supply chains and constant geopolitical tension, volatility isn’t an anomaly. It’s the business model.
@andrewchen Careful what you wish for - I can do about 4 hours a day before my brain gets fried
@TheStalwart In the GenAI arms race, the real moat isn't who trains the biggest model - it's who owns the deepest memory of human engagement.
@andrewchen The shift is real, but the hard part isn’t prompts or workflows. It’s: defining failure modes designing evals that actually catch them deciding what the system is allowed to do autonomously Agents don’t remove product work. They move it into instrumentation.
@andrewchen This ship sailed about a year ago
@MisterMarket0 @andrewchen Would bet my net worth with 100x leverage that front office finance jobs won't exist 10 years from now
@Scobleizer A very happy birthday to you. What a time to be alive.
@elerianm Markets can price tariffs. They cannot hedge the slow unravelling of the rules that make markets possible.
@ProSyn @elerianm @realDonaldTrump @federalreserve Markets have learned that Trump vs the Fed is mostly noise, not signal. Unless independence is actually broken or policy transmission changes, price action waits. Volatility comes from actions, not rhetoric.
@ProSyn @elerianm @realDonaldTrump @federalreserve Markets don’t panic over tweets. They panic over broken institutions. We’re not there yet.
