My dear friend just spoke to her cousin in Gaza City. She relayed the following account of Israeli soldiers breaking into their home, taking the men captive and using the women and children as human shields. Tanks were around the family house. Israeli military bombed the house door and my house door. They took the women and children in one room and the men in front with their eyes covered. One of my cousins was in shock and started to seize (convulsion) and they started kicking him in the head. They took them all to my house and kept them for a while. My house was full of ashes, shrapnels, bullets, etc, plus tens of snipers. My uncle and all his sons around 6 were taken somewhere while all the women and children were taken as human shields. After interrogating them they led them to the nearby school (UNRWA) which was bombed completely, and there were a lot of hostages. 30 tanks were there. They released them now after the cowards [Israeli soldiers] reached their destination. They let the women and children go to south and order them not to look back just keep walking straight. They walked for 4 km before the road was empty of tanks. 2 men were killed in front of them by a tank shell. No one knows what is the destination of my uncle and his 5 sons.

On a strip of land just 25 miles long and 7.5 miles wide at its widest point. Whole neighbourhoods flattened. Families wiped out. Hospitals collapsing under the weight of the casualties. On a population of 2 million - half of them children. 70% of them refugees. And now, the forced movement of 1 million people. A choice of forced migration or death is ethnic cleansing. The fact that it is impossible for that many to leave in that time means that this is now a genocide. We have gone way, way beyond wishy washy 'praying for peace', 'all life is precious' IG statements, posted to show you've done your bit of performative activism. Show you mean it. If you have any kind of platform right now, please use it. Speak.
