Germany occupied Kovno, Lithuania in June 1941, and shortly afterwards, thousands of Jews were seized and taken to locations outside the city where they were abused and then shot by Lithuanian guards. In all, some 10,000 Jews were murdered within the first six weeks of the Germans’ arrival, most of them at the Seventh Fort, a fortress outside Kovno. Michael Goldman-Gilad parted from his parents and younger sister during a forced deportation from the Przemyśl ghetto on his birthday, #OTD 26 July 1942. Michael was taken to the Szebnie concentration camp and from there to Auschwitz-Birkenau. As part of the evacuation of Auschwitz in January 1945, Michael was taken on a death march, during which he managed to escape, and went into hiding with the Polish Zimon family in Wielopole. In January 1949, he immigrated to Israel, he enlisted in the police and acted as one of the investigatory officers in the Adolf Eichmann trial in 1961. In color, original in comments. Recently, researchers used AI facial recognition to identify the gunman as Jakobus Onnen, a 34-year-old member of the SS Death's Head Unit. While long believed to be from Vinnitsa, Ukraine, in 1941, it is now believed the image was actually taken in Berdychiv, Ukraine. The photo was originally discovered in a German soldier's personal album and serves as a stark, documented record of Nazi atrocities.

On This Day — July 23, 1944: The Red Army walked into hell, and the world could no longer deny the industrial murder of the Jews. Soviet soldier Bernhard Storch was among the first to enter Majdanek. “We entered very carefully … barbed wire all around. We still thought it was an army barracks.” Then they saw the chimney. The mountains of human ashes. The warehouses overflowing with clothing. And then the shoes. A vast open storage hall, floor to ceiling, filled with thousands upon thousands of pairs of shoes that were carefully sorted into men’s, women’s, and children’s. Finally the “showers”: cement rooms with fake shower heads, peepholes in the steel doors, openings in the ceiling for the gas. Majdanek was the first major Nazi death camp liberated largely intact. The evidence was still there: the gas chambers, crematoria, and the remains of hundreds of thousands of murdered Jews and others. This was the moment the world got its first undeniable look inside the death factories. The shoes. The ashes. The “showers.” Never forget what they found. Never allow it to happen again.

After the arrival selection made by SS doctors 479 men & 297 women were registered in the camp as prisoners. The remaining 155 people were murdered in a gas chamber. Among them were Roza Anholt-Delden and her daughter Christina.
