We’re back!!! Save-the-date for a live, in-person SeaTalk film-screening at the Fog Alarm Building. Artists Allison Moore and Arthur Desmarteau will be presenting a new art + science short film about rockfish projected on the walls of the Fog Alarm Building.
Dr. Martin Wale, SIMRES CEO & President, interviewed at @RoyalBCMuseum. See the interview here and learn about what we’re doing for whale research on Saturna Island.

The purpose is to document whales for research, but, if they see boats transiting through the zones or fishing within them, the reported data is passed on to Transport Canada for further action, and it’s often immediate.
If you’re boating around Saturna or Pender Islands this summer and happen to see people taking your picture from shore, it may not be because you’re looking so sharp—it’s more likely that you’ve moved into a zone that you should not be in. That photo? It’s a mug shot.
TODAY at noon, Martin Wale will give an update on new, evidence-based research and education from SIMRES.

Thanks Robyn Quaintance for organizing, Saturna Elementary and SEEC students and teachers and all those who came out on a stormy, wet and slippery day.

Drum roll please! The Saturna Sea Star Bioblitz data has been calculated and, in approximately 2 hours, we counted 10,000 sea stars, with 62 people. 99% were healthy and showed no signs of sea star wasting disease, and that’s great news.
Tiny or large, our oceans support an incredible array of life. Today, we celebrate World Oceans Day, but shouldn’t we celebrate the ocean every day? We think so.

Awesome work, SEEC students! Thanks for cutting Scotch broom on Harris Road yesterday. It’s one step forward in invasive species control.

The SEEC students have proclaimed June 1 as Saturna Broom Bashing Day. Join them at Thomson Park at 10AM, tomorrow June 1 for a few hours of broom cutting or take some time to cut broom on your property. This is the perfect time of year to do so. Cookies & Coffee.

More details will be posted once the numbers are assembled, however, we found sea stars in unexpected places and none where we have seen them before—our ecosystem keeps changing. Thanks, Robyn Quaintance, for organizing this event.

The Saturna Elementary students counted around the ferry dock and SEEC students counted on Cabbage and Tumbo Islands. The weather could have been better, but some participants enjoyed a socially distant wrap up lunch at the East Point CRD Park anyways. Thanks Saturna Parks & Rec!
Last week, 58 people participated in the Sea Star Bioblitz around Saturna and outlying islands. We counted individuals and species and looked for signs of sea star wasting disease.
The sea star populations all along the Pacific Coast have experienced a catastrophic decline. We'd like to find out how they're doing around Saturna Island. Be a part of the first Sea Star Bioblitz on Saturna. To participate, please contact Robyn Quaintance ([email protected]).
