I also don’t understand this. The native app was so nice and, theoretically, can’t they just have an agent handle its development at essentially zero cost just the same as they could do for electron? There’s got to be some reason like someone at OpenAI has a thing for electron or created it or something.

The chat part of ChatGPT is the best on-ramp to becoming a paid user that learns to use new features like Work and Codex. Chat will be back at the forefront in the app relatively quickly, I’d bet. It was a mistake. Terrible concept. No way they don’t reverse it. What’s the benefit to practically removing it? Most of their users want it and those that don’t can switch to another tab. They could even just let you select a default tab in the settings. It’s neither a good concept nor good execution. Chat isn’t going away. It uses the same models as Work and Codex, and they left it as the default in the web app.

It seems like @OpenAI realized that removing chat from @ChatGPTapp was a terrible move so they just took down their entire download page for the desktop client.

Just set up a Site with the new @ChatGPTapp and it's really great! Based on IP ownership information, it seems like this may be a white label @Cloudflare Pages service: whois.domaintools.com/104.18.23.186 Based on the registrar, it looks like they bought ChatGPT.site from @RadixRegistry, but they've since transferred it to @markmonitor. It'd be interesting to know how much they paid! I had already been using ChatGPT and @claudeai to generate my personal websites in the past, having it generate single page HTML that I could upload to @DreamHost, but it's really nice being able to just chat and have updates pushed lived automatically. The networking stack in macOS 27 Golden Gate Beta 3 is broken. Failed loading of websites in non-Safari browsers and also connectivity issues in apps like Zoom. Chrome will spin and spin and time out requests. Sometimes it’ll work for ~20 minutes, then break for a while, then work again. I think it’s DNS (😏) and if you load a domain while it’s working it’ll continue working for quite a while (cache?). It seems to be related to VPNs like @PaloAltoNtwks GlobalProtect and network filters from security apps like @CrowdStrike Falcon. Somehow, it mostly just affects Chromium-based browsers. Safari and Apple apps are totally fine. I’ve filed Feedback and you should, too.

Anyone in a D.C. rowhouse with solar want to tell me how you got the math to work? It seems like anything with at least 100% grid reduction and a battery costs at least $40,000 to $50,000, which means ~18-20 years before you get a net savings on electricity. Even if I drop the battery (which is half the fun) it’s still over 10 years before any savings. I see so many solar panels on top of rowhomes in the neighborhood but I just can’t figure out why. Maybe it made a little more sense when there were credits/rebates? Without a battery I can see some logic in waiting 10 years for savings, but when you throw in the battery the system has eaten up a third of the warranty before it’s paid off, and there’s not many homes around that have had solar for long enough to know how well your panels will actually last.

This is a dumb request, but I love the Statue of Liberty and Griffith Observatory acting as a sort of backdrop for the images you’ve posted over the years. Low priority, but it would be really cool to include a “to scale” image relevant to major metro areas (LA, SF, NYC, DC, etc.) as a background when geolocating users. Just some flavor and character that might make people smile.
