One thing it’s probably safe to generalize about is we laity could and should do more on average to support their parishes and dioceses.

I mostly agree with Marcel here. But the comparison is complicated. Clergy are effective wards of the local Church so their remuneration can’t be perfectly equated with lay staff. I honestly think most priests should be paid more due to their education and responsibility level. A

Ah, I think I saw it. I tend to agree with his point and possibly this is a time for being more direct. People are effectively gossiping and presuming and engaging in unnecessary and rash judgment. It happens so much online, especially, and so many refuse to even see they’re doing it when it’s pointed out.

@_CatholicWest Sometimes it’s appropriate. Depends on the person and context. Not generally a good default though. Our history tells us that Dominic was firm but gentle. Admittedly curious about the specific case you’re alluding to..

I can sympathize as one who has not infrequently over the years felt anxious about running out of time. I think the general advice of “be considerate of others” applies and is valid, for when you enter the confessional. That is enough. That said, there’s a lot of presumption and rash judgment at play here for those who comment on this. For any given person, you do not know what’s actually going on. So our part in such a situation is to bear it patiently and continue to prepare our hearts, possibly pray for the person in there. No need to add another thing to confess..

I mean, Martin is about as well known as it gets, no? :) Anyhow, I'll keep giving him the benefit of the doubt because if nothing else, I don't feel it's my mission to hold him accountable to my idea of how he should be/act. TBH, my biggest gripe is how commercial WoF is, but I can say that since my livelihood doesn't depend on faith-related stuff. :)

I could not endorse this more, and not only for Bp. Barron, by any means, but all our bishops and the pope. As I said just a bit ago, there is a reeking illness among Catholics today--especially in the US and online. It permeates everywhere. I've seen it in numerous lay Dominican aspirants/candidates, online, in the parish hall, and so on. Listen to what Fr. Krupp is saying here. Don't knee jerk react because you don't like Bp. Barron (or Cupich or whomever). Pray for humility. Pray for openness in your heart. Pray to be slower to judge and slower to speak. Pray for a heart filled with desire for Christian unity and brotherly love.

I just can't wrap my head around the kind of Catholic that prioritizes partisan ideology and political issues over actual faith in God. This happens every so often when there is a perceived lack of moral leadership or moral failings by churchmen. Like, honestly, if your faith is in these men, it's in the wrong place! And this is not a general negative statement about clergy. It's just acknowledging that they're flawed humans just like the rest of us. We need to pray for them. They are attacked even more than we laity are by the Devil and his minions because of their vocation and ministry. 🙏🏻

If this causes you to renounce your faith, you probably never really had it in the first place. Sorry not sorry.

I opened myself up for that one, though I have seen many of your posts at him, so I do have a sense there's a "not liking" involved. I'm guessing you know we (you and I) do not fully align politically. I'm very much in center with maybe mild Right leanings overall--really depends on the issue in question. My read is you are Left leaning center. So naturally we'll feel more motivated to speak out about different things. I'm okay with that.. I won't say I haven't looked askance at some of what Bp. Barron has said/done. But no more than I have with, say, Fr. Martin. I could name other clergy who make me scratch my head and think, "oh boy," for sure. Anyways, what I was endorsing from Fr. Joe in this case was not precisely his pushing back about not using his specific interview to press hard on any issues I may have concerns about. I was endorsing the broader message about how people presume that everyone--including bishops and popes--should align with them, rather than they needing to possibly align with the bishops and popes, and I tried to be clear saying I was not just talking about Bp. Barron in that. You surely felt that way about Pope Francis, right? I hardly think Bp. Barron is the worst "offender" in terms of the "too chummy with the political Right" concern. I truly do not think he deserves the bad mouthing he gets from folks whom I consider friends online and (largely) allies in terms of how we approach the Faith. He's very reticent and thoughtful and cautious, in my book. Maybe he ought not be in some cases, but then again, maybe we need different voices in the public square engaging in different ways and with different people. I think this insistence that every bishop, priest, pope say the same things to the same people at the same level in the same way (i.e., the way I think is best) is fundamentally flawed. We can say, "oh, no, I am only concerned that [insert clergyman here] did not speak up about [insert concern here]--I don't generally demand they fully agree with me." But in practice, I think it largely pans out to the same working principle. We just notice the ones who don't align more, so it subjectively feels more selective/specific than that working principle while it actually is that. I'm pretty comfortable that Bp. Barron himself is about as orthodox as they come (in my book anyhow, for what little that's worth). I suspect he's trying to do the whole "eat with sinners" thing. And I can appreciate that. Just like I can with, say, those clergy on the left who walk in Pride parades. I don't come by such naturally/apathetically--I've learned to actively withold my judgment on these things and just pray that the best comes of those efforts, and part of that is trying my darnedest to practice humility, to believe sincerely that it's likely that it is in fact I whose judgment is wrong on the issue. I don't expect ya to agree with me here; just wanted to explain my thoughts on this a bit more, since you engaged, and I respect you and know that you're not just trolling. Hope this helps with mutual understanding if nothing else!

@NorCalHerper Probably. I've grown quite skeptical over time. One thing I feel has actually helped me is creatine and l-theanine + caffeine. Creatine esp when I didn't get enough sleep, can often help shake that grogginess.
