This represents Academia, and not Science. Science is trying to find the cause of things, discovering how the world works. Trying is not always succeeding. Formal publication is Academia: the only way to be bitter about publication is to overvalue Academia. One does not need a formal academic position to be in Academia. One can be in industry, for instance. Academia used to the best place to discover truth, i.e. "do Science". So it's easy to see how the places are conflated. But it no longer is the best.

To be correct and reproducible, it must be described in sufficient details in a publication. To be 'published' (to receive a seal of approval) the publication must be checked for correctness by reviewers.

In 2016, both Yale and Harvard ditched the term "master" because of its undertones and renamed this role to "head of college" (Yale) and "faculty dean" (Harvard). Interestingly, both universities still offer master's degrees, for which they charge a tidy sum.

@StoopMensch One reason why I'm increasingly in favor of an obligatory tour of duty in front lines civil service for all college grads. Teaching, firefighting/EMT, policing, etc. Have to pass through the bowels of society before you get to join the grey matter.
