Among the prisoners at the Dresden Stasi prison was Michael Schlosser, who secretly built a homemade airplane hoping to fly to freedom in the West. The Stasi discovered his plan before he could take off. He was arrested and sentenced to 4½ years in prison. Imagine risking everything just for the chance to be free. That was life behind the Iron Curtain. Growing up in Mao’s China, it never entered my mind that escape was possible. I later learned many people tried to swim across the channel to Hong Kong. Most didn’t make it; many drowned. And yet today, so many young people are willing to give up the freedom others risked—and died—for, in exchange for promises that a bigger government will take care of them.
