lack of people pairing up into couples and getting married reduces social cohesion in unexpected ways. we got new neighbors. saw the guy outside, said hi. turns out his sister died the day he moved in. obviously, him and i never discussed this. but his wife told my wife - only the two women would communicate that. so my wife got them flowers - and gave them to his wife. now, we’re basically friends overnight. but there’s no way the two men in the situation (him and i) would have done this absent the women. i wouldn’t get a guy flowers (bizarre, to me) and he wouldn’t (from his perspective) dump this information on some random guy he doesn’t know. you begin to understand the complex formalities present in cultures like victorian england or feudal japan that carved clear avenues and back channels for things like this.

@FineGael Bring more beds into the system and expand capacity. Create a safer society. FG seem to struggle with the long term, big picture improvements, despite being known as the party of law and order. Tough decisions need to be made.

Got a theory that social lives are pivoting to ‘big moments’ at the expensive of regular interactions: Fewer people playing sport regularly; everyone seems to be doing Ironmans. Extravagant weddings becoming the norm; then common not to see mates at the pub for months on end

@Luke_438 Good points. Funding is a pittance. Shared Island Fund should be contributing a lot more too. There's an opporunity there. Could be like a North West equivalent of Galway, bursting with students, craic and culture.

@rtenews Hopefully there'll be progress towards the opening of more stores in the north. It would be an absolute goldmine in the likes of Magherafelt, Omagh and Enniskillen.

@NiallQuinnLK73 There should be a national cycling infrastructure project with dedicated staff who are tasked with getting these on the ground here. Cycle lanes are only part of the puzzle. We need the Dutch style cycling racks, as well as the indoor/underground bike parking facilities.

@tbald101 To call it a myth is daft, it's a fact. Decades long stalling tactics and goalpost moving kept occuring until a kinetic conflict commenced. We're very fortunate to have inherited what previous generations achieved.
