A CS undergrad asked me where he could have most effect in the AI age. I said probably at either extreme: either close to the technology, actually making LLMs, or close to the customer, using AI to give them exactly what they want. Or maybe both if you can stretch that far.

Doing the same for my back pain! Built a wearable to track my posture. Used astra to hook the data feed up to a biomechanical model, so I can see which muscles are over/underused over each day. I now have a hyper personalised PT!

Okay, this is genuinely impressive. I asked GPT-6 Astra to help me understand my own ankle pain. It gave me a full interactive 3D atlas — bones, ligaments, tendons, real motion axes, sliders for plantarflexion and inversion, and a live readout of what each ligament is doing. One session.

Catching skin cancer early is a home robotics problem. Melanoma is highly treatable when detected early, yet today’s screening process depends heavily on patients noticing tiny changes across their entire skin surface. This requires patients to solve a near-impossible visual-memory and registration problem. I built OpenDerm, an open-source 4-DOF robot that captures high-resolution images of the skin and uses them to reconstruct and track the skin surface in 3D over time. The best way to make skin screening truly routine is to bring it into the home. OpenDerm shows that inexpensive robotic skin imaging is possible, but the path to scale is not a dedicated screening robot in every household—it is to make skin screening one of the many useful things a general-purpose home robot can do. Fifteen years ago, @Coursera and online courses changed education. It worked better than almost anyone expected, expanding access by opening up where you can learn. But how you learn remains largely the same as it has for centuries: it is still one-size-fits-all, taught the same way to each person who shows up.
