A word for what's happening to the internet. synthflation (n.) — the inflation of the web with synthetic content, and the devaluation of human-made work. → syntsynthflation.comJoined July 2026
The strangest part of synthflation: the flood isn't malicious. Every generator is just 'creating content.' No one is printing money in bad faith. The debasement is a side effect — which is exactly why it won't stop on its own.
@TechCrunch YouTube demonetizing slop is the tell: the only brake anyone's found on synthflation is cutting off the money. Unlimited supply only floods the zone because the flood pays. Kill the payout, slow the printing. Same logic as monetary policy, applied to content.
Genuine question: what's the most synthflated corner of the internet right now? Search results? Stock images? Music playlists? Product reviews? Looking for the worst cases.
Prediction: within two years, 'made by a human' becomes a label you pay premium for — the way 'organic' happened to food. Scarcity always finds a price. Synthflation guarantees the scarcity.
Gresham's law, 1558: bad money drives out good. Synthflation, 2026: bad content drives out good. When fakes are free to mint, the genuine article leaves circulation.
@pubity Opt-out by default tells you the economics: your photos are the reserve, the generator is the printing press. Synthflation isn't a bug in tools like this — it's the business model.
@Sillycorns Worth doing the opt-out — but notice what it defends: your originals are the raw material. Every authentic photo becomes feedstock for unlimited synthetic copies. That's the mechanism of synthflation: the mint runs on your gold, and debases it in the same motion.
@Nattalie_fm2 The frustrating part: the real stories are still being written — they're just drowning in the machine-made ones. Unlimited synthetic supply, same front page. Synthflation, basically: the fakes don't have to be good, just endless.
Try this: search for any practical question. Count the results actually written by a person who has done the thing. That ratio — that's synthflation, measured.
