Radiohead's "Creep" was the 164th most popular song among 38-year-old men when the New York Times crunched Spotify data in 2018. For men born ten years on either side, it did not reach the top 300. The ones who loved it most were about 14 when it dropped in 1993. That pattern repeated across nearly every song the analysis tested. The music that grips you for life tends to lock in during a short stretch of your teens, well before 25. The window came out to roughly 13 to 16 for men and 11 to 14 for women. Academic work backs that window and stretches it a little. A 2020 study from Durham University had 470 people between 18 and 82 rate more than a hundred chart hits, and their strongest memories clustered around age 14. A 2025 paper in the journal Memory put the emotional peak at 17, with a split worth sitting on: men settle early and stay there, while women keep reshaping their taste well into later life. Age 25 sits closer to when discovery slows than when it fully stops. A 2018 Deezer survey of listeners found new-music hunting peaks around 24, then falls off, with many people hitting what it called musical paralysis near 30. An earlier read of Spotify listening data placed the full stall closer to 33. Treat both as directional, since they lean on self-reports and streaming snapshots rather than lab conditions. The "sounds like noise" line has real machinery under it. Valorie Salimpoor and Robert Zatorre at McGill showed that a song rewards you through prediction. Your brain constantly guesses where a melody is heading, and dopamine arrives when a guess resolves in a way that feels right. Those guesses are built from whatever you have already played the most. Feed it something that ignores that learned template, and it gets filed closer to random sound than to a song. None of this is a sealed door. About 47 percent of people in that Deezer survey said they simply wanted more time to find new music, so part of the freeze is a packed calendar and too much choice. You can keep widening what you love at any age. It just takes deliberate effort, because you are pushing against a prediction system that wrapped up most of its training years ago.

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile but is morally treasonable to the American public.” - Theodore Roosevelt 1918 Theodore Roosevelt wrote these words in 1918, during the final year of World War I, when debates over patriotism, loyalty, free speech, and dissent were at their peak. Although he was no longer president, Roosevelt remained one of the most influential figures in American public life. The quote comes from an editorial he wrote for the Kansas City Star, in which he argued that patriotism did not mean unquestioning loyalty to those in power. Roosevelt believed no president was above criticism. Instead, he argued that citizens had a responsibility to speak honestly about their leaders, praising them when they were right and criticizing them when they were wrong. Those words carried particular weight because they were written during wartime, when criticism of government officials was often viewed as unpatriotic or even dangerous. Roosevelt argued the opposite: that a healthy republic depends on honest criticism, even when it is unpopular. He wrote the passage in his May 7, 1918, editorial, Sedition, A Free Press, and Personal Rule, published just weeks before the Sedition Act of 1918 became law.
