@ThHappyHawaiian FYI, the govt holding treasuries is not an asset. If AAPL buys its own bonds on the open market, it just extinguished debt. It didn't gain an asset that can be depleted. The fund is just a paper shuffle trick and the cash is effectively gone NOW, not depleting til 2033.

@emily_allyce The source is the vacationers' demand for housing. Airbnb investors can be as greedy as they want, but it's the vacationers that are feeding them cash flow to make it profitable. If they stopped being profitable they'd be forced to sell their bad investments at a discount.

@ThHappyHawaiian No matter which way you slice it, they need to SELL a bond to an outside party in order to give cash to a retiree, whether they sell their bond from their stack or a newly created one.

@ThHappyHawaiian Tomorrow, the Treasury could decide to create twice the amount of bonds in there and give them to the SS Fund. All of a sudden their "fund" tripled when the Treasury added IOUs, and they didn't print any dollars. Do you see how silly that is?
