Jonathan Meades: Magnetic North (2008). A genuinely smart and engaging documentary series, where Meades tries to both psychologically map and understand Northern Europe. I do hope BBC4 repeats this at some point.

@PulpLibrarian Meades is head and shoulders above the majority of cultural programming in assuming the intelligence of his audience. Would be considered not inclusive enough to be commissioned for a similar series today.

@alexanderrX_ Herbicides, pesticides and mechanised farming. The more efficient they get the less insects there are. Urban and suburban landscapes are more biodiverse for insects and birds than a lot of farmland these days, which is a kind of green desert

@BeardyHowse That would have made it wild by some standards. This vegetation will be mown once or twice a year & is not abandoned. Teasels and other wildflowers support far more insects and birds than a monoculture of mown grass. Brings beauty and life to central London, at little outlay.

@BeardyHowse Depends what you mean by wild. Until the mid twentieth century, any turf here would have not have been subject to synthetic fertilisers and herbicides and therefore would have been species diverse with clover, daisies and other ‘weeds’ aka wildflowers, even if mown.

@TheAdvocateMag Gay people never asked to be called queer. Queer comes with a political - cultural agenda that is pushed by a vocal minority who have captured media and activist organisations. Neither did we sign up to the ever expanding LGBTQ+ identity umbrella.
