Kiripost reported some users called the marriage illegal while others congratulated her on finding a rich husband. One commenter opposing it wrote that people treat this as a family matter, "so it's like there's no law." Well, there is a law. Marriage under 18 is void outside a narrow Civil Code exception at 16 with parental consent, an exception UNICEF told the outlet it is working with the government to remove. Article 239 of the Criminal Code sets the age of consent at 15, and Article 42 of the 2008 anti-trafficking law carries five to 10 years for sex with a child under 15, with no exemption for consent, family blessing, or ceremony. Most importantly, let's not forget her rights. They all belong to her. Under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Cambodia joined in 1992, and under Cambodian law, a 13-year-old is entitled to her education, her health, her protection, and a say over her own body. WHO data puts complications from pregnancy and childbirth as the leading cause of death for girls 15 to 19.
