Let's look at the mind-blowing scale of water usage. 🧵👇 1/ We know a single almond takes about 1 to 1.1 gallons of water to grow. That sounds like a lot for a tiny nut, right? But how does it compare to the data centers powering our internet and AI? 🖥️💧 2/ A typical, mid-sized data center uses roughly 300,000 gallons of water every single day for cooling. Large hyperscale facilities can gulp down up to 5 million gallons a day—the same as a town of 50,000 people. 3/ All together, U.S. data centers consume around 163.7 billion gallons of water per year. A massive tech footprint, for sure. But here is the real kicker... 4/ Producing the world's yearly harvest of almonds takes an estimated 1.6 trillion to 2.1 trillion gallons of water. 5/ In fact, the almond orchards in California alone use significantly more water each year than every single data center in the United States combined. 6/ Next time you grab a handful of almonds while browsing your phone, you're looking at two massive, entirely different scales of global resource management.
