Lough Neagh is the largest lake in the British Isles. It supplies more than two-fifths of Northern Ireland's drinking water. And for three summers running it has been too poisonous to touch. The whole lake turns a livid, paint-thick green, smothered under toxic blue-green algae. Bathing signs line all seventy-eight miles of shore. Dogs that drank at the edge fell sick. Europe's largest eel fishery, worked for centuries, was shut down. Scientists pulled the scum apart and found it teeming with hazardous bacteria, E. coli and salmonella among them, plus a toxin never before recorded on the island of Ireland. And they are still drawing drinking water out of it. The lake is now classed hypereutrophic, the worst grade of nutrient pollution there is. The poison is phosphorus, which feeds algae like rocket fuel, and the official figures lay around 62% of it at the door of agriculture, with roughly another quarter from sewage. None of this was a mystery. A field grazed at a sensible rate hands its nutrients back to the soil that fed it. Cram in far more animals and far more chemical fertiliser than the ground can absorb, and the surplus pours off into the rivers and down into the lough. Northern Ireland runs that phosphorus surplus year after year, because a government growth strategy told farmers to expand and keep expanding. Campaigners warned for decades exactly where it would end. They were met with shrugs. So the largest lake in these islands was knowingly fed to death to chase agri-food output, and a warming climate and an invasive mussel finished what the slurry started. The cruelty is the timeline. Stop every drop of pollution tomorrow, and the phosphorus already buried in the sediment will keep the blooms coming for up to forty years. A lake ten thousand years in the making, wrecked in a single generation, and the people who run it are still pulling the tap water out of the green.

A proposed AI data center in California is now suing for access to 260 million gallons of water per year from the Colorado River. The developer, Imperial Valley Computer Manufacturing, is seeking roughly 750,000 gallons per day (about 880 acre-feet annually) from the Imperial Irrigation District for its planned data center complex in California’s Imperial Valley. This is a major reversal. The company had previously stated that the project would rely entirely on reclaimed and recycled wastewater from nearby cities, and would not use “a single drop” of Colorado River water. After negotiations for recycled water reportedly failed, it turned to the irrigation district instead. While 260 million gallons is relatively small compared to the Imperial Valley’s massive agricultural water use, it is equivalent to the annual water consumption of roughly 7,300 local residents. The request is significant because the Imperial Valley is one of the most water-stressed regions in the U.S., with every drop of its fresh water coming from the already overtaxed Colorado River. The company claims its water use could be offset by leaving 160 acres of leased farmland fallow. However, local opposition is intensifying. Imperial County officials are considering an emergency moratorium on data centers, and several cities in the area are moving forward with their own restrictions. This case underscores a broader tension: AI data centers are often marketed as “digital,” yet they require substantial real-world resources — particularly water for cooling, in regions already facing scarcity. A tree species that was just formally discovered is already on the brink of extinction. When scientists first found this tiny tree in Panama 25 years ago, there were many of them scattered across the landscape. By 2024, only about five remained. The species, now named Clusia nanophylla, exists nowhere else on Earth. Most of its habitat was cleared for roads and cattle pastures before the tree had even been formally described by science. Think about that for a moment. A species can remain unknown to science and still disappear almost as soon as we learn it exists. We keep discovering new life while erasing it at the same time. The popularity of animal torture videos is booming. Some channels distributing these vile videos have over 30 million subscribers. A SMACC report identified animal cruelty videos that had been viewed 5.3 BILLION times across social media platforms. Indonesia was by far the largest identified source of content, but the audience is global. Dogs, cats, rabbits, pangolins, primates and snakes are among the animals most frequently exploited. This increase in animal cruelty content prompted Asia’s largest coalition of animal protection experts to convene the first international meeting on the issue in Indonesia this June. Has human nature changed for the worse? There have always been sadists, but it has never before been available on this scale. Repeated exposure to cruelty can normalize, desensitize and encourage more extreme abuse to get the same effect, and now thousands of like-minded people can easily find each other on the internet and form large online communities. A major driver for content producers is the monetization of cruelty–and that is rewarded by the social media platforms.
