@petereharrell @deanwball You left out #8 - the most important of them all: 8. Do nothing - and if Anthropic (or whoever) thinks it has a claim then file it against whoever they think has offended them in civil court. Pretty much how nearly every other commerical dispute in the world gets resolved.

The sheer amount of time Fable was available to be distilled before Kimi3 was released makes this claim dubious. And even if so, very likely of minimal incremental value to Kimi, again owing to the time frame. It's quite possible that quantizing or other legit techniques are the substance here. Important that we pay most attention to what matters.

And very importantly we should not reflexively accuse the Chinese labs of distilling / stealing IP. They may have done so, but the levers inherent to transformer technology provide more than ample headspace for Kimi to have achieved its results via engineering improvements.

Elon’s original vision of an open, American AI was right. He could still flip Grok to open source which could be checkmate. Why? If you flip Grok open source, you necessarily move all margins out of the model layer and down into the infrastructure (chips + CSPs) and above to apps. He owns a massive data center build, owns next gen inference AI and owns the most used app (Cursor). So arguably he would make *more* margin by doing this. Then moving the DCs to space makes even more sense.

I don’t yet have a strong opinion on banning Chinese open source AI (or not) But my advice to the tech community: frame your arguments in terms of why they’re good for America Rather than why they’re good for start-ups It’s more effective

I wonder if the open source models are inevitable. In the sense that, every dollar not made by an Anthropic or OpenAI goes to the customer, the compute, or the application companies. That's a lot of powerful players with an incentive to make open source models a dominant option.

If you are not currently running open models yourself - directly so that you can experience them yourself - please do so. The performance levels are near frontier and the costs are 50x lower on average. Not 50%. 50x!
