"I live on a street with a lot of elderly neighbors. Mrs. Higgins lives next door. She’s 90. Every night at 5 PM, she turns on her porch light. If the light isn't on by 5:15, I go over. It’s our silent code. Last week, 5:30 came. No light. I ran over. I knocked. No answer. I used the spare key she gave me. She was in the kitchen, confused. The power had gone out in her section of the house, and she couldn't reach the fuse box. She was sitting in the dark, afraid. 'I knew you’d come,' she said when she saw my flashlight. I fixed the fuse. We had tea. 'You’re a good neighbor,' she said. 'No,' I said. 'I’m just watching the light.' We are all just walking each other home in the dark. Look for the lights. And if one goes out, go knock. It takes five minutes to save a life."

'I need to start with a confession. Not many things bug me, but if there’s one thing that does, it’s the idea that my story is a football fairy tale. I know when people say I’m some sort of Cinderella Man that it’s meant as a compliment. I appreciate that, but to be totally honest, it doesn’t feel like one, because it isn’t true. No magic wands have been waved in my direction, I didn’t win some kind of lottery to land a spot on one of the biggest clubs in the world. The reason why I’m a Liverpool player is the same reason why I’m captain of my country: I’ve worked my bollocks off to get where I am, and by doing that, I’ve been able to make the most of whatever talent I have. Why does this matter? In truth, it doesn’t matter to me as an individual. It probably doesn’t matter to my family, either. It only matters because there are God knows how many little Andy Robertsons out there. Kids who are struggling to convince people that their talent deserves an opportunity. Kids who just need a break to get to wherever they deserve to be. Kids who might give up if they start believing that only a fairy tale can save them. I’ve never wanted to be a poster boy, but if I’m going to be a poster boy for anything, it should be this ― if you don’t give up, and if you carry on believing in yourself when others are doubting you, you can make it. Minimum wage in 2005 was £5.05 and a Freddo was 10p. Meaning that one hour of work got you 50 Freddos. Fast forward to 2025, minimum wage is £12.21 and a Freddo is 35p. Now one hour of work will only get you 34 of them. That's a 142% rise in pay but a 250% rise in frog shaped chocolate bars. If wages had kept up with the price Freddos, the minimum wage would be £17.50 an hour. The economy’s in shambles and yes I’m measuring it in chocolate frogs. But this post is about more than that. Too many people are working full time and struggling to survive because absolutely everything is increasing faster than wages. Something needs to change.
