@ShiraOvide Mysteries by PD James. Inspector Gamache reminds me a tiny bit of James's Adam Dalgliesh, they take place in modern London, but some are in the country. And not cozy but because he is a god Raymond Chandler, hardboiled but evocative. Plots don't tie up nicely but you won't care.
