@Mut1791 @jessesingal I haven't seen one of these people whining about accuracy even mention that Nolan heavily toned down Odyssesus & his men's constant weeping that is present in the poem, a much bigger part of the story than any description of Helen's skin color.

The preemptive boycotts of Nolan’s Odyssey in the name of anti-wokeness mirror the very spirit conservatives have long opposed. For more than a decade, we’ve endured a string of disappointing movies because contemporary progressivism hardened into secular puritanism. Like earlier moral reform movements, it demanded public confessions of orthodoxy, ritual purification of “problematic” elements, and the cancellation of dissenters. In institutional Hollywood, this took the form of explicit inclusion quotas, sensitivity training, revised awards criteria, and the systematic prioritization of identity-based messaging over coherence, character, or dramatic tension. The result was formulaic, risk-averse storytelling. The consequences have been plain to see - a string of commercially and critically disappointing projects, such as the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, which sacrificed the original’s anarchic, character-driven comedy for heavy-handed gender-reversal premises and “girl power” framing. Any deviation from the diversity agenda was treated as ideological transgression, so films devolved into exercises in ticking representational checkboxes. However, the right’s reflexive boycotts now punish perceived deviations from “correct” representation, even when they come from directors who have largely stayed outside progressive orthodoxy. The result is a narrowing of the imaginative space in which ambitious, large-scale work can even be attempted without immediate partisan judgment. The classics are not static relics sealed in amber. They are living testaments to the human imagination - palimpsests on which successive generations have inscribed their own visions while preserving continuity. Homer’s Odyssey itself stands as the fountainhead of a long tradition of bold reinterpretation. Virgil refracted its wanderings into Rome’s founding myth in the Aeneid; Dante recast Ulysses as a restless seeker damned for intellectual hubris in the Inferno; and Tennyson, in his stirring dramatic monologue “Ulysses,” transformed the hero into a Victorian emblem of indomitable will and existential longing: “to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.” Mythic archetypes possess a remarkable elasticity. They can absorb new cultural dimensions, philosophical depths, and formal narrative experiments precisely because they resonate with timeless human truths - mortality, homecoming, cunning, and the boundless sea of experience. Yet when conservatism curdles into closed-mindedness, it inoculates artists against the very openness they need to engage their own moment in history with sincerity and courage. Conservatives who cling to reflexive suspicion should remember that genuine artistic greatness requires the openness they sometimes reject; pre-judging work before it is experienced only ensures the mediocrity they claim to oppose.

@tykng_ If that's how you feel about going to the movies alone, you would probably be traumatized going to the theater alone where ushers & the people next to you at intermission occasionally *will* ask if you are alone with a slightly concerned tone 😆.

@ScottMGreer If "the Right" was trying to make the movie fail, then it kind of is a huge defeat for them. Dumb to go after a Nolan movie. Maybe stick to Disney slop like Snow White or Little Mermaid so when the movie fails you can pretend you're the reason and not that the movie was just bad

Ancient Greece, on the other hand, is the foundation of western civilization not just modern day Greece and the Odyssey is a text taught to most of us in schools.

@slackrguy @JasonRink A lot of people will be interested in a story but say they will "wait for the movie" because they have no interest in reading. And far more people have read The Odyssey than, say, The Lord of the Rings just by virtue of the fact that it is required reading in schools worldwide

Where these people were when Spielberg cast Glenn Close to play a male pirate (in a kids movie!) 35 years ago or the multiple times Tilda Swinton has played a man I have no idea.

@BanshG44252 @Greg3f I don't even think he needed a wish in the movie. Both girls wanted him and all he needed was to tell Nikki he liked her, and that's what makes what he does so fucked up.

@TheDavidVinc I miss the brisk pacing of jrpgs that respected my time. And they always felt like much more epic journeys compared to a lot of modern jrpgs that take 100+ hours where not much really happens.

@Rahul50926441 @tr_hudson That's what she said to Sarah who also had a crush on Bear, but I think the movie drops enough hints (i.e. "nobody knows when I like somebody") that Nikki likes him if he had just been willing to talk to her about it instead of relying on magic. Makes the tragedy of it much worse

@JRPG_Warrior My main issue with modern jrpgs is pacing and the way they disrespect your time. There are times when the stories & characters are compelling enough that the endless visual novel-like dialog is bearable (Persona, Trails). Usually they are not.
