Giving someone the ability to build something does not mean they should be allowed to build anything that affects another person’s experience as a human being. That requires judgment, taste, empathy, and an actual understanding of how people think and behave. Most of these systems were made by people who have none of that, and everyone involved has gotten so used to the result that they think this is just how things are supposed to work.

The end user usually cannot even articulate what is wrong. They might not realize the information is inaccurate, redundant, useless, badly organized, or that half of what they are being asked to do should not be necessary in the first place. They just know the experience is confusing, annoying, and somehow makes them feel stupid.

We’ve entered this era where every company has its own custom website, portal, forms, and processes, and most of them just suck. Not because building a good experience is impossible, but because the people building these things are not actually builders. They were handed tools that let them make something, so they assumed they were qualified to decide how other people should have to experience it.
