Watching this old footage, one thing struck me: even in the middle of one of the most difficult periods in our history, you can still see glimpses of the beauty, order and character of old Port Harcourt. This was January 1968, during the Nigerian Civil War, just a few months before the city eventually fell to federal forces in May. Beyond the history, I want the old Port Harcourt people here to look closely at the video. 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲? Yesterday, I spent most of my day writing WhatsApp messages, emails, responses, and updates. They kept coming from every direction, and each one required the right tone, structure, and clarity. Recently, many pastors and men of God have started running podcasts and online platforms. There is nothing wrong with that. But we must understand that a pastor is not seen by many people as just a commentator or content creator. To many young Christians, he is first a spiritual voice. So when opinions are shared on marriage, culture, money, politics, relationships, and life, people may not easily separate personal opinion from biblical truth. That is why caution is important. When contributors are invited and their views are built around non-Christian doctrines or worldly principles, it can mislead young believers who assume everything on that platform carries spiritual weight. And many of us, the consumers, keep feeding the same thing we later condemn. That is why the situation around the late Alexx Ekubo’s wife is so disturbing. From what we have seen, the family tried to protect her identity. They tried to give her space to grieve. They tried to keep her away from the noise, the cameras, the speculation, and the public dragging. But what did some bloggers do? They started digging. They started posting. They started treating a grieving woman’s privacy like content. At what point do we stop? This is not just about celebrity gossip. This is about a woman who lost her husband and deserves the right to mourn without strangers fighting to expose her face. We cannot keep pretending that our curiosity is harmless. Sometimes, the content we rush to consume is someone else’s pain. Sometimes, the “gist” we are looking for is the little peace another human being is trying to hold on to. 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲. Not everything must become content. Not every private life must be opened for public consumption. And not every picture is worth the damage it may cause. But I also have every right to look at your decision, weigh it against the realities on ground, and form my own opinion about you. 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵. If your political decision in 2027 is driven by 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻, 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, or a deliberate refusal to see the damage being done, then I also have the moral right to call you for what you are. Politics may be personal. But 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 affect all of us. So while you are free to choose your candidate, I am also free to question your 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗼𝗺, 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, and 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 behind that choice. 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵. Let the truth be said. I spent almost the whole day trying to hold myself from making this post, but at this point, I just have to say it. People keep saying, “children of these days have changed.” But the more I think about it, the more I realise something deeper: 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱. Children still come into this world as clean sheets. Blank pages. Arrows waiting to be properly directed. They do not arrive with bad manners, disrespect, pride, rebellion, or entitlement already written inside them. Somewhere along the line, we stopped training and started negotiating everything. Today, you cannot correct a child in public. You cannot scold a child that is not yours. Teachers are afraid. Neighbours are quiet. Elders are careful. Even when a child is clearly wrong, everyone looks away because the parent may come and fight you. And sadly, we are now seeing the results. Yes, every child belongs first to their parents. Nobody is saying children should be abused, humiliated, or treated without respect. But correction is not hatred. Discipline is not wickedness. Proper guidance is not oppression. What we are seeing today is not what God sent to us from the hospital. It is the result of months and years of what we allowed, ignored, excused, defended, and normalised. Some of the habits, attitudes, and vices we see among children today would shock the generation before us. The same parents who once thought we were stubborn may look at today’s reality and say, “Maybe those children of our time were even calm.” The truth is simple: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. It needs to be reviewed. Retested. Recalibrated. We must bring back responsible correction. We must teach respect, boundaries, discipline, gratitude, and consequences. We must stop defending children blindly when they are wrong. Because if this continues unchecked, in a few years, we may not just be asking what happened to children. Especially when you start getting your dimensions, specifications, and choices right. Before you know it, you are no longer buying what you need. You are now buying because the app has successfully entered your head. 𝘐𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘵. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮. Buying from Temu requires 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲. I’m speaking from experience. At some point, I had to delete the app, block the adverts, and stop the communication from reaching me on Facebook and other platforms. Because if I didn’t do that, I knew I would keep dragging myself deeper into unnecessary spending. So yes, enjoy good deals. But don’t let good deals control you. 𝗕𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱.

Truly, in recent times, I have spent a lot of money. Some came from borrowed funds. Some came from personal funds. But one thing has become very clear to me: 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. I have spent on learning tools, work tools, software, physical equipment, and even experiences that forced me to pause, think, and grow. Sometimes, I deliberately take a full day off. I shut everything down, sit with my little black book, and review my journey honestly. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘐 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘯? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘐 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬? 𝘞𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵? That simple habit has changed the way I see money. The moment I can clearly label an expense as an investment, I feel less guilt about the money spent. I take notes. I learn from it. I ask better questions. I look for the dividends, not always immediately, but eventually. And over time, I have seen the difference. 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭. 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘱 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘥𝘰𝘮. 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴. Sometimes, the money you spend today is quietly building the version of you that will earn better tomorrow. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

I woke up this morning and found out I had been added to three more WhatsApp groups for different celebrations and “support.” Honestly, it’s becoming a lot. I am not against celebration. Celebrate. Make noise. Enjoy your moment. I genuinely wish you well. But please, don’t force me into every noise around your celebration and then make it look like I’m the bad person when I don’t show up, contribute, or participate the way you expect. These days, the cost of dressing up, buying fuel, and showing face at an event is enough for me to stop at the nearest Chicken Republic, buy myself fried rice and chicken, sit in my house, and celebrate you from afar in peace. 𝗝𝗼𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱. Sometimes, a sincere prayer and good wishes from a distance are enough. And please, if money is tight, say it plainly. Stop turning celebration into emotional blackmail. We love you. We are happy for you. But everybody is also trying to survive.
