When Correction Feels Like Disrespect “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.” — Proverbs 12:1 One of the hardest things in life is hearing something about ourselves that we don’t want to hear. Correction can feel like criticism. Concern can sound like judgment. And sometimes love can arrive wearing clothes we don’t recognize. Our first reaction is often defense: “You don’t understand me.” “Who are you to judge me?” “You’ve made mistakes too.” And all of those things might even be true. But here’s what maturity has taught me: The messenger can be imperfect and the message can still contain truth. That’s the part pride doesn’t like. Pride immediately examines the person speaking. Wisdom examines what was said. There is a difference between someone trying to tear you down and someone willing to risk upsetting you because they genuinely want to see you do better. Real friends don’t always tell you what makes you comfortable. Sometimes they tell you what might make you change. And change rarely feels good in the beginning. A mirror doesn’t insult you because it shows you something you didn’t notice. It simply reveals what is there. Correction can work the same way. That doesn’t mean every criticism deserves a seat at your table. Some people speak from bitterness, jealousy, or ignorance. But before you throw the whole message away, ask yourself: Is there even five percent of this that I need to hear? Because sometimes the very words that irritate us the most are touching the place that needs the most attention. Don’t let offense rob you of an opportunity to grow. You don’t have to agree with everything somebody says about you. But be secure enough, humble enough, and wise enough to inspect it before you reject it. Sometimes God sends encouragement through applause. And sometimes He sends growth through a conversation we wish had never happened. The question isn’t whether correction hurt your feelings. The question is: Did it reveal something that could help change your life?

Tanja Got Me Higher Than the Empire State Building What I’m about to tell you is so ridiculous that even the angels probably leaned over the balcony of Heaven and said, “Y’all… come look at this fool right here.” I have ALWAYS had a problem with pain medicine. And when I say problem, I don’t mean it makes me sleepy. I mean I have landed in the hospital THREE TIMES so constipated I felt like I was trying to give birth to a 12-pound bowling ball wearing football cleats. No epidural. No Lamaze class. Just me sweating, praying, and wondering if the hospital had an obstetrician available for a 60-year-old man. And there stood Tanja, holding my hand like a midwife. Talk about role reversal. I’m looking at her like, YOU DID THIS TO ME! She’s rubbing my hand like, Push, Kerry, push! I’m just glad I didn’t have to take the baby home. So my doctor finally said, Kerry, maybe traditional pain medicine isn’t for you. Have you considered medical marijuana? At this point, if it keeps me from giving birth to a 12-pound cinder block with a head full of hair, SIGN ME UP. But first I had to get my medical marijuana card. Because I’m not about to have somebody drop a dime on me and the Feds kick down my door. Next thing I know I'm sharing bunk beds with Pablo Escobar. I’m not built for cartel life. I can’t even roll over without assistance. So, they gave me this little spray bottle about the size of breath freshener. Doctor’s instructions were simple: Start with ONE spray. If needed later, no more than TWO. Apparently Tanja missed the first half of that lecture because all she heard was: TWO! One day I typed on my eye-gaze computer that I wasn’t feeling good. Tanja whispered, Do you want to try the THC spray? She won’t say marijuana too loudly because apparently she believes the DEA has our house bugged. I opened my mouth and lifted my tongue. SQUIRT. Then another. SQUIRT. Tanja said, Nothing came out that second time. YES IT DID! Unfortunately, I’m paralyzed and can’t yell, WOMAN, ABORT MISSION! So what does she do? A THIRD SPRAY. Then, because she still wasn’t satisfied, she squeezed that bottle like she was trying to put out a kitchen fire. I got enough THC in my mouth to tranquilize Willie Nelson. Thirty minutes later, I wasn’t feeling any pain. I wasn’t feeling EARTH. I was higher than the Empire State Building wearing platform shoes. And because I couldn’t talk, Tanja had no idea. Meanwhile, I’m sitting there completely paralyzed thinking: Why is that lamp looking at me? I was so high I thought the ceiling fan was trying to communicate with me in Morse code. I was so high I tried to blink in Spanish. I was paranoid at DEFCON ONE. I never, ever, EVER want to be that high again. But I will say this: I wasn’t constipated. And after giving birth three times… I’ll take the paranoia over another 12-pound bowling ball.
