A winning ad is two things: a winner and your next winner.
This is exactly what you should do when you find a new winner:
→ The hook: Look for new ways to say the same thing. Change "Expert reveals how to scale Facebook ads" to "3 ways to scale Facebook ads".
→ Actor demographics: Try different ages, ethnicities, and genders.
→ Filming location: Think of where else someone would use the product.
→ Video length: Try 15-, 30- and 45-second cuts.
Start there before you spin up a new concept.
As a rule of thumb, develop 10 concepts per $100K of spend. Six iterations, four new concepts.
What percentage of your creative output currently goes to iterations?
Click-through-rate (CTR) is my least favorite metric in advertising.
We analyzed 10k+ ads with $10M+ in spend and found no correlation between CTR and CAC/ROAS.
This holds for all in-platform metrics. Including hook rate and hold rate.
So where in the funnel can you begin judging creative? Post click.
We begin to see correlation post-click at these metrics:
- Cost per install
- Cost per add-to-cart
- Cost per registration
The exact metrics to look at varies by customer. But these are the earliest metrics you can use to evaluate creative.
That being said, in-platform metrics have their place: to iterate on winners.
Here's how:
- Winner with low CTR: improve your call-to-action
- Winner with low hold rate: improve you story
- Winner with low hook rate: improve your hook
