The Copeland African American Museum at Valdosta State University would like to wish all Blazers a great start to the Spring Semester! Feel free to stop by in between classes. We are open 10-2 M-Th and 10-1 on Friday.

Did You Know? On July 28, 1868, the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified. The amendment grants citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States" which included former slaves who had just been freed after the Civil War.
Did You Know? The road to freedom began on September 22, 1862 when President Lincoln issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation which called all Confederate states to rejoin the Union by January 1, 1863 or their slaves would be declared “thenceforward, and forever free.”
In accordance with Valdosta State University's recent COVID-19 guidelines update, effective immediately masks and social distance protocols are no longer required within VSU buildings. The museum will continue to offer face masks for those who would like one.

She patented the invention in 1988, and today she's recognized as the first female African American doctor to receive a medical patent. Stop by next week to learn more about her trailblazing history and the many first she accomplished.
Dr. Patricia Bath (born 1942) revolutionized the field of ophthalmology when she invented a device that refined laser cataract surgery, call the Laserphaco Probe.
In order to facilitate the transitioning of NEW pieces of African American history into the museum, we will be closed on Tuesday, March 16th and Wednesday, March 17th. Please contact the museum at 229-245-2448 for any concerns.
The Browns filed a patent for their closed-circuit television security system in 1966 and it was approved on December 2, 1969. Tour the museum today to learn about more women inventors!
To feel safer, Brown and her husband developed a way for a motorized camera to peer through a set of peep holes and project images onto a TV monitor. the device also included a two-way microphone to speak with a person outside and an emergency alarm button to notify the police.
Marie Van Brittan Brown a nurse who invented a precursor to the modern home TV security system. The crime rate was high in Brown's New York City neighborhood, and the local police didn't always respond to emergencies.
