This is wholly unsurprising. Government intervention always drives consolidation in markets (look at banking or house building). This means less competition and worse choice either higher prices or worse quality
In spite of tough economic conditions, Britain’s pub industry seems to be, on aggregate, holding up ok. But the loss of small locals nonetheless has an outsized impact on their communities. Pubs are getting bigger, but less personal. 2/2

This is interesting. France used to be an innovative, fast-growing country. Then it elected socialist Mitterrand as president in 1981 and moved to big state and high taxes. It has never recovered since then Isn’t it ironic that Germany and the UK want to repeat the same mistake?
Also a classic case of how interventions grow over time from merely a minor problem to a major distortion of markets, but very few people can discern the cause of the distortion and call for yet more interventions…
