You know more than me on the subject but I think I agree with you on this. I dont think there is a gradient. The concept feels binary to me. But I also think consciousness, as well as other measures of the mind, are somwhat ill defined and anthropomorphic. I think the main problem is that often feelings of self and the lack of our understanding of feelings in other organisms cloud our judgment on the subject. Like for example feeling more connected or self aware on drugs. I dont think this is necessary a higher degree of consciousness. More a feeling of being elated and aware. In my mind you are not conscious if you can feel hungry. But you are if you are aware of feeling hungry and able to reason about it. The next level would be being aware of being aware if being hungry? But I think this comes naturally from the original awareness. Is it then being aware of more different feelings? I fail to see the gradient. I think you see similar confusion in how people handles intelligence in AI. Intelligence is clearly a scale though but typically also anthropomorphised and ill defined. If a manifactured entity shows intelligence we typically write it off as less intelligent if it doesnt show the exact same properties as a human brain. I think consciousness is even harder for ppl to define as it is a bit recursive in its nature.

@BltyGustav89883 @googlegemma @grok Its soo much better!! You need to try it to believe. Our internal evals puts it really high up against many proprietary models. And the consistency is really good. Lower flakiness rates on longer agentic chains and things like this. 💪
