WHY SHOULD PEOPLE WITHOUT A DISABILITY CARE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS TO THE NDIS? Because disability is not something that only happens to other people. You may not have a disability today. Neither may your partner, your children or your parents. But a stroke, serious accident, neurological disease, mental illness, cancer treatment complication or countless other events can change a person’s life in an instant. That is one of the fundamental ideas behind the NDIS. The NDIS was never supposed to be charity for a small group of Australians. It is social insurance. We collectively share a risk that would be financially impossible for most individual families to carry alone. Much like Medicare, you contribute to the system hoping you never need the most expensive parts of it. And that is why Australians who have never interacted with the NDIS should be paying attention to the changes now being proposed. Reforming the NDIS is not necessarily a bad thing The scheme needs to be sustainable. Fraud should be prosecuted. Providers exploiting participants or taxpayers should be dealt with. Money should be spent on supports that genuinely improve people’s lives. There is nothing unreasonable about any of that. But cutting someone’s NDIS support does not make their disability disappear. That is the part of this debate we cannot afford to forget. If someone loses the support that allows them to live independently, attend work, communicate, leave their home or remain safely with their family, their needs don’t simply evaporate. The consequences can instead turn up somewhere else: • hospitals • emergency departments • mental-health services • homelessness services • child-protection systems • aged care • policing and justice systems • or on the shoulders of exhausted families providing unpaid care. A saving in one government column can simply become a larger expense somewhere else. And there is an even bigger problem Governments have talked about moving some people away from individual NDIS packages towards foundational supports and mainstream services. That can work — if those services actually exist, are adequately funded and are available when people need them. It becomes very different if people are removed from the NDIS first and governments promise that another system will eventually look after them. That is not reform. That is creating a gap and hoping vulnerable people don’t fall through it. People with psychosocial disability are particularly important in this discussion because many already struggle to navigate fragmented mental-health and disability systems. But the principle applies much more broadly. This isn’t “disabled Australians versus taxpayers” Disabled Australians are taxpayers. Their families are taxpayers. Their carers are taxpayers. And every taxpayer is only an accident, illness or diagnosis away from discovering why Australia decided it needed disability insurance in the first place. The choice therefore isn’t: “Reform the NDIS or leave it exactly as it is.” Of course the NDIS can be improved. The question is: Are we fixing the parts that aren’t working while protecting the insurance promise Australians were given? Or are we reducing that protection first and hoping another service will eventually pick up the pieces? That distinction matters. Because once a social safety net is weakened, you don’t get to decide whether you will ever be one of the people who needs it. PLEASE DO SOMETHING Don’t assume this issue only concerns people currently receiving NDIS support. Write to the Prime Minister. Write to your local MP. Write to your senators. Tell them you support sensible NDIS reform — but insist that the proposed changes must make life better, not worse, for Australians with disability and their families. Ask them to ensure that nobody is pushed out of the NDIS unless appropriate, adequately funded and genuinely accessible alternative supports are already in place.
