Also, a multi-year effort to make the OCaml compiler relocatable landed in this tree. Binary caches (uv style) are entirely possible now once a few downstream packages (like ocamlfind) have patches to add support

The latest OCaml release (5.5) has some great stuff. Module dependent functions are a big step, and we've been waiting for it to land foreeever. Polymorphic parameters is great too. discuss.ocaml.org/t/ocaml-5-5-0-…

The view that we shouldn't do more medical scans because incidental findings cause a lot of harm doesn't sit well with me. It seems like the issue it points to isn't the scan but the response to it. If you see something on a scan but have no other symptoms, you could ignore it.

@zeynep I don't know how useful it is to pick apart the specific observations of a non expert missing about their own health experiences. It's true she could have dug more onto the details here! But the underlying point still has something to recommend it.

@zeynep There's a lot of decision making that's driven by very broad brush best practices that are optimized at a population level, and are often very far from optimal when considered at an individual level.

@zeynep It's just not the case that the real world medical system is optimal, or even particularly good at making decisions in a way that maximizes the information content from tests and lab results.

@samth @RBMD1982 For sure. But I don't have much faith that the medical system does a good job of optimizing in the face of people's psychology. Certainly the public health system did a very bad job of this.

@otis_reid @RBMD1982 I pretty much agree that there is a real tradeoff here. But I don't have much faith that the current systems does a good job of landing that trade-off in anything like a societally optimal way.

@RBMD1982 I don't think that concern is totally misplaced, but there's something problematic about it. It reminds me a little bit of some of the institutional misstep to covid in the public health world.
