Clarkson's Farm sits at 9.0 on IMDb, which almost nothing does. The third series premiere was streamed by 5.1 million people in a week and was the second most-watched thing on any streaming service in Britain that year. It has beaten Rings of Power, which cost roughly the GDP of a small country. A programme about a man losing money in a field, made by a shopping company. So the obvious question. Why has nobody made another one? Every commissioner in the world says they want countryside, tradition, real work, animals, weather, stakes and a proper cast of characters. This has the lot, and it has the numbers to prove people want it, and in five years not one broadcaster anywhere has tried to repeat it. Americans keep asking why they have not got one. The answer is that they already do, and nobody commissioned it. Go to Bluffton, Georgia, where the only thing you could buy in town was a postage stamp. Will Harris works 3,200 acres his great-grandfather settled in 1866. He was trained in the industrial methods that took over after the war, came home in 1976, and spent twenty years running cattle on corn and soy with hormones, antibiotics and a sprayer. In 1995 he stopped. All of it, at once. He calls what he does now radically traditional farming, which beats anything the marketing industry has come up with in thirty years. Bluffton now has a general store, the first shop to open there in over forty years, plus a restaurant, lodging and an events building. The farm employs more than 160 people and has its own inspected abattoirs on site, so nobody else takes a cut and nobody else sets the price. One man went back to grass and dragged a town along behind him. Up in Virginia, Joel Salatin has been making the same case for decades. Seventeen books. Cattle moved daily onto fresh pasture, chickens following three days behind to scratch through the dung and break the fly cycle, which is not a theory, it is what herds and birds did here for a few million years before anyone built a feed lot. One of his books is called Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal. Hold that title against a Cotswolds district council refusing Clarkson a car park. Two countries, one fight. Britain's version is planning law and a sixteen mile radius. America's is a certified septic system before you may sell a pie at a farmers' market. Selling your own food to your own neighbours has been made harder than shipping it in from four thousand miles away. Neither man waited for a channel. A camera on a fence post, a podcast, a customer at the gate with cash. Britain needed a comedian with a Lamborghini tractor before it would look. Georgia had a stubborn man who stopped buying fertiliser, and it got its shop back.
